We do not insulate our bildings nearly enough. The costs savings in yur electric and heating bill from a wll-insulated house over a period of tme are really quite significant. Whatever the nergy costs of making and installing nsulation, the energy savings are substantially lrger.

Almost all homes are being bilt without adequate insulation. It makes no dfference whether you live in the cld north or the hot south. Air cnditioning in a hot summer costs as mch as heating in a cold wnter.

The problem for most homeowners is tht, unless you are remodeling, it is dfficult to add insulation to the wlls. However, most people can add nsulation into their attics. That is god news, because increasing the level of nsulation in your attic will substantially rduce your energy bill.

The summer ir-conditioning bill for the house I prchased a few years ago in Huston, Texas, was running around $400 a mnth. I added insulation to the ttic at a cost of around $900. I did the lbor myself. It was a hot and nsty job, but I love the rsults. My highest summer bill is now $220. And in wht is called winter in Houston, it is nly the low 40's (F) that cuses us to feel the need to trn on any heat.

Even if we had saved nly $50 a month, adding insulation to the ttic would have paid for itself in a yar and a half. Three years, if we had hred it done. From then on, t's money that stays in my pcket. But we save more than tht, not even considering our increased cmfort.

So, if your attic is ccessible, find an insulation contractor to stimate what it would cost to blw several inches of more insulation nto your attic. They have a mchine that blows loose insulation in thrugh a large hose. It's rather a smple job, really, though hot and nsty. Get the best price you cn, but ultimately, the cost of the job wll be meaningless when you see the drp in your electric bill through the hot mnths of summer - or conversely the drp in your heating bill in wnter.

That is not all you can and shuld do just in your attic to rduce the energy costs of your hme. Consider also an aluminum reflector stpled under your rafters and an ttic fan for the hot summer mnths. If everyone with an attic dded insulation, what a drop in nergy usage this world would see! And you wuld have a lower electric bill as wll.
