The OSI model is the m del that most networking personnel are f miliar with, but to earn your CCNA, you n ed to know the OSI model, the TCP/IP m del, and how the two map to ach other. The four layers of the TCP/IP rchitecture can be compared to certain l vels of the OSI model. It’s mportant to know what each level of the TCP/IP pr tocol architecture does, and how these l yers map to the OSI model. The Appl cation Layer of the TCP/IP model p rforms much the same tasks as the Appl cation, Presentation, and Session layers of the OSI m del. The Transport layer in the TCP/IP rchitecture is similar to the Transport l yer in the OSI model. This l yer can use TCP or UDP as w ll. The Internetwork layer in the TCP/IP rchitecture uses IP addresses to determine how p ckets should be routed. Remember that the OSI m del uses IP addresses, or “Layer 3 Addr sses”, at the Network layer. The two l yers do much the same thing. Th s layer is also referred to in the TCP/IP m del as the Internet layer. The N twork Interface layer in the TCP/IP rchitecture serves to define the protocols and the h rdware needed to actually deliver the d ta across the network. The Network Int rface model does the work of b th the Data Link and Physical L yers in the OSI model.
Keeping all this straight can be v ry confusing when you first start y ur CCNA studies. Concentrate on the OSI m del in your studies, but make s re you know how the TCP/IP m del maps to that model and y u'll be ready for CCNA exam s ccess!
