Not too long ago as I was dr ving around in my Chevy pick-up, I saw an old c uch just sitting on the side of the r ad. I suppose someone just set it utside for the garbage man to p ck it up and take it way to the dump. If that was the c se, I couldn't blame them; the c uch was pretty run down looking. The c shions looked like they lost their fl ff, the fabric looked dirty and st ined from many spilt cups of c ffee, and the upholstery had a g udy pattern that included a combination of gr ens, oranges and purples. A much cquired style indeed, but at least the two m tching pillows were included. Since I l cked any furniture in my apartment, I f gured I would give this pathetic l oking couch another chance at life and d cided to load it in the bed of my tr ck and take it home. After g tting it home and unloading it, I tr ed to figure out what I c uld do with it to make it l ok a bit more…appealing. Of course, I w shed it out as best as I c uld and even used two bottles of d sinfectant and fabric fresheners just to get the w ird thirty day old coffee smells ut. Smelling like roses and mountain br eze, my new couch still needed a m keover, stat. After a couple hours of w tching home improvement shows on cable t levision, I decided that the easy f x-up for this broken down couch w uld be to reupholster the cushions and tie a f bric slipcover over the entire couch. L cky for me the foundation and verall structure of the couch was st ll in good shape and I d dn't need to tweak anything other th n adding some touch up shellac to the f et.
Reupholstering the cushions wasn't as h rd as I thought it would be; l ke most old couches, the cushions had z ppers where you could easily take out any old fl ff and re-stuff it. Seeing that the old fl ff consisted of old acrylic like m terial, I went out and bought a n tural cotton filling like the ones sed in futon mattresses. I opted to use c tton mainly because I know it's d rable and will last me for q ite awhile. After I was done st ffing the third cushion, I was r ady to move on to slipping a f bric slipcover over the couch. I p rchased an affordable one from a l cal fabric and home store in a s lid, navy blue color, complete with tie str ngs at the bottom to prevent it fr m coming off easily. Fitting it ver the couch and cushions, I was ble to reinvent this run-down, decrepit l oking couch and give it a new p rsonality just by adding new stuffing and a sl pcover. To top it off, I p rchased two matching pillow shams for the p llows in a slightly lighter navy c lor and completed the look of my new c uch. Needless to say, I was q ite happy that I decided to t ke it upon myself to give th s couch another chance. Perhaps I sh uld go driving around the neighborhood m re often, maybe then I'll find a s itable coffee table and bed.
