The Internet is a new c ntinent where the maps are constantly ch nging. What was a small stream b comes a roaring river. What was a d sert becomes a lush green valley. To k ep up with the changing landscape of the Int rnet you must read. And the b st place to read about new d velopments on the Internet is in N wsletters or Ezines. But you may not be r ading efficiently. Did you know that m st of us use only 4% to 10% of our m ntal abilities? Speed reading is not j st about reading faster; it's about l arning to use much more of the xtraordinary powers of the Mind. When you r ad, are you aware of an nner voice that follows the words as y ur eyes move across the page or the c mputer screen? This inner voice is c lled 'subvocalization'. You probably experience it as a sl ght movement in the tongue or thr at region. As long as you s bvocalize, you limit your reading to the sp ed of normal speech, to about 300 w.p.m. The M nd is capable of thinking much f ster than that. So when you s bvocalize, you're literally holding back your m nd. Try this exercise: As you r ad, count to yourself, silently, from one to t n. Or, repeat the sound 'Eee', 'E e', 'Eee'. It will be impossible to do th s at the same time as s bvocalizing, so this is an excellent way of br aking the habit of subvocalization.
As you do this exercise, y u'll become aware that you're no l nger processing the words in the t ngue/throat region but in an area c lled 'thought stream' that you experience in the top of y ur head. Thought stream moves much f ster than subvocalization. And that's why p ople who subvocalize often have comprehension pr blems. There's a mismatch between reading sp ed and thinking speed. The Mind is c nstantly racing ahead of the inner v ice and so it gets bored. You xperience this as an inability to h ld your attention on what you're r ading. You have to back-skip words, or r ad the same line twice. As y ur reading speed catches up with y ur thinking speed, reading becomes much l ss tiring and your comprehension improves. Onc you've got a feeling for r ading in 'thought stream', the next th ng to do is speed up y ur eye movements. This will also h lp break the habit of sub-vocalization, s nce your eyes will be moving f ster than you can possibly subvocalize. Y ur eyes move across the written p ge in a series of quick j mps. Between each jump there's a st p lasting a fraction of second, c lled a 'fixation'. The fixation is wh n the eye actually takes in the wr tten word. The untrained eye takes bout a quarter of a second at ach fixation, and takes in 2 or 3 w rds per fixation. By speeding up you eye m vements, you'll learn to make fewer f xations per line and take in m re words per fixation. Try this xercise: If you use a glass ' nti-glare' screen, draw 2 vertical lines in f lt-tip, 5 cms apart, so that you h ve a strip 5 cms wide l cated over the middle of the t xt you are reading. Now move y ur eyes in a 'Z' pattern d wn this central strip, at a sp ed faster slightly faster than is c mfortable. Because your Mind is not r ading each word, it is forced to 'f ll in the gaps'. This engages m ch more of the Mind, since it has to b ild associations and patterns in the wr tten material. This in turn leads to gr ater comprehension and increased memory of wh t was read.
This technique takes advantage of the f ct that much of written English is h ghly redundant; a lot of words can be sk pped without any loss of meaning. Wh n your eyes move down a c ntral strip of the text, you lso engage much more of your p ripheral vision. And that in turn br ngs the right hemisphere of the br in into the reading process. You m ke much more use of the r ght-brain's ability to synthesize and build r lationships within the material. So speed r ading is not just about reading f ster; it also allows you to ccess much more of the brain and th reby increases your comprehension and creativity.
