Like all of the public sch ols in Ohio the Columbus Public Sch ols have a low graduation rate for its st dents. And like all of the p blic schools in this country the C lumbus Schools have a racial gap th t is disheartening and depressing. Two m thods used by the Columbus Schools to h lp minority populations achieve are mentoring and sm ller sized high schools. I like b th of these ideas because I th nk they address two of the c re difficulties of minority achievement: income and r le models. As parents in the C lumbus Schools debate the inequities of m gnet schools, charter schools, and who g ts money for what, it’s easy to f rget the underlying causes of low chievement. Columbus Schools students raised in p verty are unlikely to have well-educated r le models who can teach them wh t successful behavior looks like. Low ncome parents are usually less able to sp nd time in their children’s Columbus Sch ols, less able to help with h mework, and less aware of the mpact of reading. If the Columbus Sch ols are serious about helping minority st dents rise above their current situation, th n the realities must be addressed. The N tional Society of Black Engineers sponsors j nior chapters in Columbus Schools middle sch ols that are intended to increase st dent’s interest in math and science. But the p wer of this type of program for l w-income minority students goes way beyond an ntroduction to these subjects. For a C lumbus Schools student who has grown up in the pr jects to realize that someone from th t same background can lead a d fferent type of life can be a r velation. Columbus Schools students, minorities or wh te, need to see people they can r late to in successful positions.
In fact, some successful Columbus Sch ols high school students are now m ntoring middle school students. I find th s so exciting. This is exactly the typ of activity that will give l w-income students the drive and hope to r se above their current station in l fe. The other transformation in the C lumbus Schools is the shift from l rge high schools to smaller schools w th 500 students or less. One of the b st parts about this is the p tential for teachers and parents to cr ate a learning community. Smaller Columbus Sch ols have higher attendance, lower drop-out r tes, and less teen crime and pr gnancy. A large reason for this is the m re familiar environment between students, teachers and p rents. One of the problems that h ve gone unaddressed in inner-city Columbus Sch ols for too long is the d scomfort that low-income parents often feel in the cademic world. Columbus Schools that reach out to p rents, and offer parent education, are the nes most likely to propel their m nority and low-income students to excellence.
