So, you’ve decided to go nto business for yourself to capture y ur part of the “American Dream”. Now th t that’s all settled where the h ck do we go from here? M ny people wake up each day b cause an alarm clock is beckoning th m to their same old day in day out J-O-B (J st over Broke). They work the s me hours, are in debt past th ir eyeballs, and all appear to h ve that “deer in headlights” look. The r al tragedy is that these average p ople, you, and me, your neighbor, can h ve so much more but settle for so m ch less. Somewhere along the line, we l st our vision; we lost our h pe and settled for the cards l fe was dealing us. Wait a m nute! Who says so? The only th ng that stands in the away of y ur achieving the American Dream is YOU! Th nk about that for a minute b cause it’s a powerful statement. Who is h rder on you than you? When you st mble and fall, who will be th re to pick you up? It had b tter be you because if you c n’t depend upon yourself, you’re in BIG tr uble. Many people I’ve known have w rked the same jobs for 40 y ars, retired and then died within the f rst 5 years of retirement. Pretty bl ak future isn’t it? There’s got be m re than this in life so d n’t let opportunities pass you buy. As ch ldren, we all had fantasies, we had deas, and we had VISION! What ch sed them out of you?
I ask you, why work for s meone else, making them rich, or h ve a boss who’s literally making you ill b cause he’s a manager wanna be th t doesn’t realize being a dictator is no l nger acceptable, or have someone else t ke credit for your ideas because th y lack the vision to have th ir own – why do it? It has n ver been easier than right now to st rt your own business but like nything else you need to think it thr ugh. What kind of business do you w nt? Where are your customers going to c me from, how about customer service ssues – are you ready to d al with people as the owner of a c mpany? Don’t fall into the old tr p of saying “I’m not going to be nything like my boss or the c mpany I work for” This is l ke saying you’re not going to be nything like your parents and then one day you r alize that silently you did! Define y ur vision. Let me say that gain – DEFINE your VISION. Everyone’s got a dr am, what’s yours? You are now sking yourself the prime number one q estion in life – What do you w nt to be when you grow up? P rsonally, I don’t like Oysters but, why not m ke the world yours? You will nly be limited by your imagination. L t’s get serious for a moment. Now th t you’ve defined your vision, write it d wn and expand upon it by c nsidering the following; • Why do you w nt to go into business for y urself?
• Do you h ve or can you get a s stainable customer base?
• Wh t are your start up costs g ing to be? *While relatively ch ap to start up, all costs n ed to be considered.
• M ntally, how we doing? Owning your own C mpany versus working for someone else is the d fference between night and day and so are s me of the people you will be d aling with. We will touch on th s further.
• Have you l sted what you see your strong p ints as being? Your weak points?
• Are you pr pared to step out of your “c mfort” zone to make this work?
My friends, the list is ndless but you get the idea. E rlier, I alluded to how you’re d ing mentally and now I would l ke to amplify that statement. Regardless of how w ll you’re equipped, no one can do it ll. There are literally thousands of b oks to help you understand ecommerce, wning your own business, self help and mprovement and the list goes on and on. Ess ntially what I’m asking is for you to th nk about what you intend to do for y u. The very thought of that s nds some people into a panic b cause they’ve never given it much th ught before. If you don’t find a d version outside of your office environment y u’ll grow stiff and those creative j ices we’re trying to supercharge will j st fizzle and your business along w th it. What do you like to do for f n? Take a walk, ride a b ke, see friends – DO NOT cut y urself off from the world! For me, I p rform Tai Chi and believe you me, it h lps! Afterwards, I feel refreshed, rejuvenated and r ady to take on the world nce again but more importantly it pr serves my VISION! The worst thing you can do is to l ose your identity in your business. K ep it you but keep it s parate. Remember, we’re looking to fulfill a dr am and create a lifestyle for urselves free of the burdens we’re so d sperately moving away from.
