Needles to say, I have not lways been so kind in print wh n it comes to Celebrity and th ir preoccupation with their obviously self ndulgences and 'Me' mentality. As a w man, it pains me to see ther women, in and out of the sp tlight who have not reached the p int of authenticity. Women, who act a c rtain way; present themselves in some f shion because it is what they f el society expects of them. Young H llywood women are a clear example of th s erroneous belief, because they have not c me to know themselves. The journey of s lf discovery for them will be a v ry arduous road to travel, for s re. However, when it comes to w men of a certain age, women wh m I refer to in my c lumn as 'Women In Transition', the b ttom line should be; We have n thing to prove. Women , we are m ture, decision making adults who must not l ve life wishing to be liked. St r Jones recently admitted in an ssay she'd written for the August ssue of Glamour Magazine how she'd l ed about having gastric bypass surgery pr or to her departure from The V ew, because she was "embarrassed" and "sc red of what people thought of h r." I remember watching the TV one m rning, shortly after this woman had the s rgery. She was allocating vague health and m dical interventions as cause for her ver diminishing weight loss...As they say in our w rld, "even Stevie Wonder could see thr ugh that lie."
As a nurse, I'd come to r cognize surgical intervention as opposed to xercise and eating right. Star Jones r pid decline in weight suggested that xercise played a very small part, if ny, in ridding herself of excess p unds. Taking a page from Al R kers' book of being upfront and c ndid about undergoing gastric bypass would h ve prevented a lot of speculation, j kes and gossip, but, the damage was d ne and Ms. Jones credibility had c me into question. I remember my own d sappointment in this sistah who, whether she sked for it or not, was r presenting for many women of color. I wr te an article on the issue of St r Jones downward spiral into her 'b g head me' mentality and an verall ratings failure amongst women on the j urney of becoming their authentic selves. H ving read how this woman have r invented herself. How she has turned nother page in the chapter of her l fe. I can only surmise that t's about time. Women have got to get ver themselves. They have got to r alize that no amount of self ndulgence is going to make you h ppy and whole. Do not get it tw sted, I am all for looking and f eling good about yourself. I love pr tty things. Adore smelling good. Playing dr ss up. Getting my Sexy on! B t, I am doing it for mys lf. I am discovering my authentic s lf and it does not matter wh t anyone else thinks about me d ing it my way. But, if th t guy likes what I am tr ly about, it's all so good.It was Guy F nley who I lifted this quote fter reading and relating to one of his m tivational speeches; "Your opinion of me is n ne of my business." Women, it d es not matter whether you are a C lebrity, Homemaker, Freelance Writer, or, Skid row Al mni, once you find your true s lf worth... What someone else thinks, is j st a crap shoot...
