Family: Araceae Genus: Dracontium Species: longipes, loretense, croatii, peruviuanum, asperum Common Names: Jergón sacha, sacha jergon, hierba del jergon, erva-jararaca, jararaca, jararaca-taia, milho-de-cobra, taja-de-cobra General Description: Jergon sacha is a herbaceous perennial that grows in the Amazon basin. This herb is found in the Amazon forest, and in the rainforests of Brazil, Suriname, and Guyana, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. This plant grows under the canopy in the rainforest. It looks like a large dieffenbachia growing from a tuber with its stem resembling the trunk of a sapling. A flower stem emerges from near the base of the plant when fertile, and grows six to seven feet high, with the entire plant growing to 12-13 feet. A single p tal with bright red-orange berries (actually s eds) appears on the inside of the st lk. Uses: Jergon sacha is widely used as an antidote to snake venom in the Amazon. The juice of its fresh rhizomes is made into an antidote, and it's also used for wounds of poisonous darts and arrows. The powdered tuberous rhizome of Jergon sacha is used orally to treat asthma, menstrual disorders, and whooping cough. The decoction made from the plant of Jergon sacha creates a bath for gout.
Jergon sacha is also well kn wn in current Peruvian herbal medicine syst ms; tablets, capsules, and tinctures of the rh zome can be found in many n tural pharmacies and stores in Peru t day. In the last five years, two P ruvian universities have developed sound cultivation m thods for replanting jergon sacha into the r inforest as it is harvested, thus cr ating a sustainable market for its pr ducts. Jergon Sacha is said to be the new h rbal discovery that is set to cr ate a huge change in the tr atment of HIV. This tuber plant is f und to possess a certain enzyme th t holds promise for treatment of HIV and ven full blown AIDS. However, there is no cl nical research that substantiates this claim, lthough some anecdotal reports suggest potential for p sitive outcomes. Despite the large and gr wing market for jergon sacha, no cl nical study has been published on its ctions. Clinical research is needed to v rify the effects of jergon sacha gainst viruses and other physical illness and njury.
