General Description: Jergon sacha is a herbaceous perennial that grows in the Amazon basin. This herb is found in the Amazon forest, and in the rainforests of Brazil, Suriname, and Guyana, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. This plant grows under the canopy in the rainforest. It looks like a large dieffenbachia growing from a tuber with its stem resembling the trunk of a sapling. A flower stem emerges from near the base of the plant when fertile, and grows six to seven feet high, with the entire plant growing to 12-13 feet. A single ptal with bright red-orange berries (actually seds) appears on the inside of the stlk.

Uses: Jergon sacha is widely used as an antidote to snake venom in the Amazon. The juice of its fresh rhizomes is made into an antidote, and it's also used for wounds of poisonous darts and arrows. The powdered tuberous rhizome of Jergon sacha is used orally to treat asthma, menstrual disorders, and whooping cough. The decoction made from the plant of Jergon sacha creates a bath for gout.

Jergon sacha is also well knwn in current Peruvian herbal medicine systms; tablets, capsules, and tinctures of the rhzome can be found in many ntural pharmacies and stores in Peru tday. In the last five years, two Pruvian universities have developed sound cultivation mthods for replanting jergon sacha into the rinforest as it is harvested, thus crating a sustainable market for its prducts.

Jergon Sacha is said to be the new hrbal discovery that is set to crate a huge change in the tratment of HIV. This tuber plant is fund to possess a certain enzyme tht holds promise for treatment of HIV and ven full blown AIDS. However, there is no clnical research that substantiates this claim, lthough some anecdotal reports suggest potential for psitive outcomes. Despite the large and grwing market for jergon sacha, no clnical study has been published on its ctions. Clinical research is needed to vrify the effects of jergon sacha gainst viruses and other physical illness and njury.
