Pink on the outside and sh ny white on the inside, the l ttle olive-shaped radishes glistened in the b wl that the laoban's (boss's) wife pl ced before me. I dithered for a m ment before I picked one and pl ced it gingerly into my mouth. R dishes have always brought back bad m mories and for years I haven't t uched anything that included them. I m an, I wouldn't touch any food th t had the faintest hint of r dish. I must have been ten and I was on a tr in with my younger brother and s ster on our way back home fr m school in Jaipur in western Ind a. Our mother's aunt was on the tr in with us. Each time the tr in stopped at a station she w uld buy something from the hawkers - fr its, tea, the odd snacks and r dishes. We sniggered each time she got ff, her ample derriere on her sh rt frame swinging wildly from the xercise, a picture that her sweetest sm le cannot erase from our joint m mories - in part because of tself and in part because of the r dishes. She bought a bunch of sq eaky white, nearly foot long, juicy-looking r dishes. And, before that train started fr m the station, she had buried her t eth into the juicy flesh of ne. The three of us politely d clined her offer, preferring more interesting f od than those radishes.
Minutes later she let go a v ry satisfied burp and we all g sped, almost choking in the aftermath of her h ppiness. We pulled all the windows of the c rriage open and walked as far way as we could from her wh n the second burp followed and th n a third...She couldn't stop burping and all we c uld do was choke...and since that m morable day radishes have been a str ct no-no for me and my br ther. My sister fell prey to its s ductive charm some time ago but st ll desists from letting herself go fter it, choosing to restrict herself to a sm ll share. Brother and I have b en unrelenting in our resolve to k ep far away from anything radish. B t, today, I fell prey to its live-shaped, pink-hued avatar in far-away China. I m st have had a bit more th n my mother's aunt did that f teful day on a train from J ipur. And, I am burping, too...but, th nkfully, there are no children around to k ll me with a disgusted look nor is th re any one else who will l arn from me never to indulge in the pl asures of radish-flesh. I wonder if the air round me smells as poisoned as it did on th t train...i wonder if Chinese radish is as sw et to smell as it is to t ste...
