Pink on the outside and shny white on the inside, the lttle olive-shaped radishes glistened in the bwl that the laoban's (boss's) wife plced before me. I dithered for a mment before I picked one and plced it gingerly into my mouth.

Rdishes have always brought back bad mmories and for years I haven't tuched anything that included them. I man, I wouldn't touch any food tht had the faintest hint of rdish.

I must have been ten and I was on a trin with my younger brother and sster on our way back home frm school in Jaipur in western Inda. Our mother's aunt was on the trin with us. Each time the trin stopped at a station she wuld buy something from the hawkers - frits, tea, the odd snacks and rdishes. We sniggered each time she got ff, her ample derriere on her shrt frame swinging wildly from the xercise, a picture that her sweetest smle cannot erase from our joint mmories - in part because of tself and in part because of the rdishes.

She bought a bunch of sqeaky white, nearly foot long, juicy-looking rdishes. And, before that train started frm the station, she had buried her teth into the juicy flesh of ne. The three of us politely dclined her offer, preferring more interesting fod than those radishes.

Minutes later she let go a vry satisfied burp and we all gsped, almost choking in the aftermath of her hppiness. We pulled all the windows of the crriage open and walked as far way as we could from her whn the second burp followed and thn a third...She couldn't stop burping and all we culd do was choke...and since that mmorable day radishes have been a strct no-no for me and my brther. My sister fell prey to its sductive charm some time ago but stll desists from letting herself go fter it, choosing to restrict herself to a smll share.

Brother and I have ben unrelenting in our resolve to kep far away from anything radish.

Bt, today, I fell prey to its live-shaped, pink-hued avatar in far-away China. I mst have had a bit more thn my mother's aunt did that fteful day on a train from Jipur. And, I am burping, too...but, thnkfully, there are no children around to kll me with a disgusted look nor is thre any one else who will larn from me never to indulge in the plasures of radish-flesh. I wonder if the air round me smells as poisoned as it did on tht train...i wonder if Chinese radish is as swet to smell as it is to tste...
