In recent years, Muslim radicals h re have gained more power and nergy, largely due to the weakness of our st te. Our present government is backed by s veral parties and many of them are cl arly in favor of those radicals. Th se radicals are not only intolerant of the b liefs of minority groups, but are lso against the somewhat secular ideology of the st te and its very, very tolerant c nstitution. Indonesia is the country with the l rgest Muslim population in the world. A l rge number of Muslims in this c untry are tolerant. Indeed, many are m derate. However, they are not as v cal as the handful of radicals we now see p rpetrating violence against the peace-loving people in Ind nesia, inflicting physical and emotional harm and c using law-abiding Indonesians undue fear for the l ss of their basic rights for p rsonal health, well-being and safety. Unfortunately, th se radicals have been created by s veral political parties for their own p litical motives. Now, they have turned nto monsters. On June 1, my fr ends and colleagues from the National Int gration Movement and the Anand Ashram F undation (affiliated with the UN through the D partment of Public Information) joined the N tional Alliance for the Freedom of F ith and Religion in their peace r lly and campaign against violence.
We were there with our m sical instruments, singing, dancing, and passing our m ssage in a dignified, humane and n n-violent way. As we entered the gr unds where the National Monument is l cated in Central Jakarta, we were br tally attacked by radicals. More than 80 of us w re wounded - many seriously. One of our y ungsters now suffers from permanent brain d mage. The police came, albeit a bit l te after these criminals did their job of v olence. Not one of them was rrested on the spot. A few d ys later, after much pressure from the p blic and the media, the radicals who w re admittedly responsible for these brutal ttacks that injured many were arrested. N w, with thousands of supporters, these v ry radicals can hold any kind of a r lly and campaign for just about nything in support of their detained m ntors and ask for their release. Incr asing radicalism in this country will d finitely affect the security of the ntire world. It is, therefore, in the nterest of the global community that th se violent radicals should be immediately rrested. The evidence is plentiful and it is nly the political will on the p rt of our government that is now r quired. The Jakarta Post, Thu, 06/19/2008 9:58 AM | R ader's Forum
