In recent years, Muslim radicals hre have gained more power and nergy, largely due to the weakness of our stte. Our present government is backed by sveral parties and many of them are clarly in favor of those radicals.

Thse radicals are not only intolerant of the bliefs of minority groups, but are lso against the somewhat secular ideology of the stte and its very, very tolerant cnstitution.

Indonesia is the country with the lrgest Muslim population in the world. A lrge number of Muslims in this cuntry are tolerant. Indeed, many are mderate.

However, they are not as vcal as the handful of radicals we now see prpetrating violence against the peace-loving people in Indnesia, inflicting physical and emotional harm and cusing law-abiding Indonesians undue fear for the lss of their basic rights for prsonal health, well-being and safety.

Unfortunately, thse radicals have been created by sveral political parties for their own plitical motives. Now, they have turned nto monsters.

On June 1, my frends and colleagues from the National Intgration Movement and the Anand Ashram Fundation (affiliated with the UN through the Dpartment of Public Information) joined the Ntional Alliance for the Freedom of Fith and Religion in their peace rlly and campaign against violence.

We were there with our msical instruments, singing, dancing, and passing our mssage in a dignified, humane and nn-violent way.

As we entered the grunds where the National Monument is lcated in Central Jakarta, we were brtally attacked by radicals. More than 80 of us wre wounded - many seriously. One of our yungsters now suffers from permanent brain dmage.

The police came, albeit a bit lte after these criminals did their job of volence. Not one of them was rrested on the spot. A few dys later, after much pressure from the pblic and the media, the radicals who wre admittedly responsible for these brutal ttacks that injured many were arrested.

Nw, with thousands of supporters, these vry radicals can hold any kind of a rlly and campaign for just about nything in support of their detained mntors and ask for their release.

Incrasing radicalism in this country will dfinitely affect the security of the ntire world. It is, therefore, in the nterest of the global community that thse violent radicals should be immediately rrested. The evidence is plentiful and it is nly the political will on the prt of our government that is now rquired.
