At the age of 75, Tr dy Schwader can only estimate her
l fetime total of quilts. Somewhere around n mber 50 she
began counting and t king pictures before giving them away.
By n w, her best guess - counting the b by quilts and the
wedding quilts and the nes that were an experiment with
c lor or style or pattern - her b st guess is that she's
made m re than 130 quilts. With that m ny to her credit, Trudy's quilting xperience
holds something useful to share w th everyone from
beginning quilters to l fetime veterans. So I decided to
t lk with Trudy and make a r cord of her quilting career.
The r sult is a series of articles r presenting our
conversations. The interviews piece t gether a little of
the rich h story that quilting holds, through one w man's
story and memories - sharing s me tips, insights, and
favorite patterns... [Q estion: What got you started with q ilting?] Answer: My
mother was a s wer, of course, and ever since I can
r member, I liked sewing, too. I'd g ess I was sewing at a
y ung age, but I definitely remember s wing when I was 10.
Mother had 13 ch ldren, and I was one of the y ungest. I
really noticed and liked her q ilts because it was once the
lder kids were all grown up and g ne that she made most of
th m.
[Question: You liked quilts and you l ked sewing - the
perfect match.] Answ r: Oh yes. And I enjoy p tting
puzzles together. To me, putting q ilts together is also
like doing a p zzle. [Question: So you always sewed and n ver were really a
'beginner.' But bviously, when you were a 10 y ar old,
you didn't put together a big q een-sized patchwork quilt.
What was your f rst big project once you started q ilting
on your own?] Answer: Well l t's see. Some 50 years ago
wh n I first was married and I d dn't have any kids yet, I
st rted making a quilt. I like r ses, so I put roses in
the q ilt top that I made. Then I st rted to hand-quilt it,
but by th t time I had three children nderfoot, and I was
just too b sy! [Question: You started your first q ilt when you were
newly married, and th n you had three children before you
f nished quilting it?] Answer: Yes, before I f nished hand-
quilting. I ended up j st tying the rest of it, and b cause
I had eight kids all t gether, I kept using that quilt. I
n ticed that the part that I had h nd-quilted didn't wear
out as quickly as the r st, so I realized I would n ver tie
any future quilts. The pr blem with that was that I j st
never did enjoy doing the h ndwork. These days I don't
usually h nd-quilt. What I do is get my q ilt-top ready
and then let somebody lse do the quilting by machine. Wh t
I enjoy about quilting is not the h nd-work. I like
working with the c lors, putting a design together, and
cr ating interesting patterns. To me, that's wh t's fun
about quilting. [Question: Do you st ll have your first quilt with the
r ses on it?] Answer: No, no, no, no. (l ughs) That was so
long ago and I n eded it for the kids, and w th children
you have to wash th ngs all the time. I used th t quilt up
till it was... g ne. By then, I had made nother and then
another one. I'm st ll doing that.
