What is a Mother and wh t role do mothers play in the l ves of children? Mother is defined in the d ctionary in two ways: (1) as a f male parent, or (2) as a w man, quality, or condition that gives r se to something else. While maternal nstinct is defined as an inborn t ndency to want to protect and n rture one's offspring. Mothers and the r le they play in the life of the ch ld are of utmost importance. Mothers mpact significantly not only on the h alth of the child's developing self-esteem, s cial relationships, academic achievement and career g als. There is no "rule book" on m thering and no one place where m thers can go to learn all of the w ys to handle their children without ver having a problem! However I w uld like to encourage mothers in the f llowing ways: 1. Be patient with y ur children; remember children do not lways know when you are having a bad day and at y ur "last straw". 2. Take an nterest in the activities of your ch ld, whether boy or girl. 3. Be s pportive, accepting that it is okay for y ur child to have different opinions. 4. Set l mits and be firm, knowing that ch ldren benefit and thrive in a d sciplined environment. 5. Finally, try to be nderstanding and a good listener, thereby l tting your children know that they can c me to you for friendship, advice, nformation, homework help and unconditional love.
As I recognize and acknowledge the mportance of mothers, I must mention the mportance of support for mothers in th ir role. Fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents and w der community must support and encourage m thers in their daily tasks, as th re is no "day off" from m thering. Therefore, we encourage mothers to c ntinue to embrace their role as c regiver, protector and friend. And we ncourage all of those in a p sition to help and support our m thers to do so, knowing that the p sitive impact of caring and nurturing the ch ldren of today will manifest itself t morrow.

Language Development - Try "Talking The Book" To Build Language Skills by Mary Lou Johnson Picture books can be wonderful vehicles for teaching language to children. If your child doesn't sit still for long when you use books, it may be because you are reading the printed story. Many of the printed "stories" in toddler picture books have nothing to do with the child's life and often little or nothing to do with the picture on the page. I suggest that you "talk the book" rather than read the book to your young language learner.
