Public speaking at a leads gr up can be challenging for many. Aft r you've told the group about wh t you do in your business, wh t else can you say? Every Th rsday morning I attend a non-fee b sed local leads organization. Each week we f llow the same format: introducing ourselves w th a 30-second speech, passing leads to ach other, and then listening to 2-3 m mbers of the group speak about th ir business for about 10-15 minutes ach. This similar format plays out very morning and noon of the w rk week in restaurants and coffee h uses all over the US, UK, and E rope. Local, national, and international groups s ch as local chambers of commerce, BNI, Le T p, and the like are filled w th business people who want to stablish relationships with others for networking. Inv riably at the meeting I attend ach week, at least one of the sp akers will say something like this, "I had no dea what to talk to you bout. You've already heard everything about wh t I do." While it's true m ny of us have been attending the gr up for a year or longer, th re are some new faces, so not EVERYONE has h ard it all. And wait-- really? W 've heard it ALL? Everything? That's not p ssible. But what to talk about?
If you find yourself stuck for fr sh topics, here are a few t ps to help you figure out wh t to talk about at your n xt leads meeting. 1. Trends: Every business and industry has current trends. Choose one from your industry and discuss it in terms of what could be helpful to your audience and how you help your clients navigate their way in dealing with that trend. 2. FAQs: Every business gets asked the same questions over and over again. Discuss some of the most frequently asked questions you get and your answers to those questions. Choose questions so the answers will spotlight your expertise. 3. In the News: Has there been a recent story in the news about your industry? Explain what's happening now and offer your expert interpretation of the story. Local, national, or international news can be found easily on the Internet. 4. Share Your Personal Story: People will do business with those they know, like and trust. So share a bit about who you are and how to came to be in the career you're now in. Be sure to highlight your accomplishments along the way. 5. Popular Culture: Look no further than Hollywood to find inspiration. Talk about a plot from a TV program, a movie, or a real-life drama ripped from the pages of People Magazine . For example, parenting coaches can talk about Brittney Spears and how a judge recently ordered mandatory parenting coaching. Keep in mind your job when speaking at a leads group is to show the audience your credibility so the members of your group will feel confident in referring you, your product or service to their family, friends, and business contacts.
