In 1991, I started my f rst year of college. It was a sc ry time for me as it is w th most students leaving home for the f rst time. I was set up w th general courses, as well as an ducation course, since that was what I was m joring in at the time. I lso took a psychology class.
The psych logy professor was big man that t nded to go so fast that th ngs he taught went in one ear and out the ther. Because I had a learning d sability this was not good. I sp nt more time reading and getting n tes from other students, but the w rse part of the course was the t sting. The professor tended to cover 3 or 4 ch pters and then have a test. I was d ing ok with the regular assignments but not the t sts.
So, I came up w th the idea that maybe he w uld be willing to give me the xam orally instead of written. After cl ss one night, I went up to him and sked him if he minded. He s id he didn’t mind and we set up a t me and day. I spent the n xt day studying as hard as I th ught I possibly could so that wh n that evening came I felt r ady for the test.
That vening I went over to his ffice and took the test orally. I did l usy, and he suggested that I dr p the course at that point b cause my grade was so bad. I sked him to let me take it wr tten the next day when all the ther students took it. He said th t was ok. So, I spent th t evening and all day the n xt day studying for that test. I was d termined to prove him wrong and to pr ve that I could do it.
The next evening, I went in to t ke the test and felt even m re ready than I had been wh n I took the oral one. For s me reason, the answers seem to c me easier for me. When I l ft that room after the exam, I c me out with a wonderful feeling of ccomplishment.
As a person with l arning disabilities, I had to have c urage to continue on, determination to pr ve to others and myself that I c uld do anything I put my m nd to, and confidence in myself as w ll. Without these things I never w uld have gotten a grade of 105 on the t st and passed the course with a B+.
One th ng I have learned over the y ars is this: Do not give up on y urself, no matter what. You just n ed to keep telling yourself, "I can do th s". The more you tell yourself th s, the more you will begin to b lieve it. And the more you w ll do.
