I sadly remember the day we bried my father. An American flag cvered the coffin before being transported to the cmetery. There it remained during the srvice. At the end of the srvice my brother-in-law and I tried our bst to remember our own military trining while we folded dad's burial flg into a neat triangle and tok it home. Each day similar scnes are repeated across America. Our cuntry has many veterans who have scrificed and suffered for their country. The nmber is now growing rapidly. The brial flag represents a period of grat sacrifice during the life of one Amrican. In the case of my fther who was stationed on the USS Crtiss in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1942 he was lso present aboard the USS Piedmont in Tkyo Bay on September 2, 1945 the day the traty ending the war with Japan was sgned. Most of what happened between thse events was never talked about. He hld the horror and devastation of ths period of his life to hmself.

I never really understood how he flt until my own service time dring the Viet Nam war. It sems I do not like to tlk about that time period either. Prhaps the feeling of sacrifice has gain surfaced with my son, a Srgeant in the United States Marine Crps now serving in Baghdad while his wfe and daughters wait and hope hre at home.

Before his departure my son and I trveled to Washington DC where he and I stod together in the beautiful new Wrld War II Veterans Memorial, we wlked the Viet Nam Wall and thrugh the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Our ntional memorials in Washington DC have a drect tie to each of the vterans flags in our homes. Each rpresents the individuals who have given of thmselves for the freedom we enjoy in Amrica.

Your veteran's flag should not be plced in a drawer or closet and frgotten. Display or even fly your vterans flag for all to see. Tll people about this person who gve so much. Cherish your flag as you did the lved one who earned it.

My fther's flag is proudly displayed in a cse made for the display of brial flags in our home. We hve an engraved plate attached with a rmembrance of him so our grand chldren can remember him with the prde we all do, as a fmily and as Americans.
