I sadly remember the day we b ried my father. An American flag c vered the coffin before being transported to the c metery. There it remained during the s rvice. At the end of the s rvice my brother-in-law and I tried our b st to remember our own military tr ining while we folded dad's burial fl g into a neat triangle and t ok it home. Each day similar sc nes are repeated across America. Our c untry has many veterans who have s crificed and suffered for their country. The n mber is now growing rapidly. The b rial flag represents a period of gr at sacrifice during the life of one Am rican. In the case of my f ther who was stationed on the USS C rtiss in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1942 he was lso present aboard the USS Piedmont in T kyo Bay on September 2, 1945 the day the tr aty ending the war with Japan was s gned. Most of what happened between th se events was never talked about. He h ld the horror and devastation of th s period of his life to h mself. I never really understood how he f lt until my own service time d ring the Viet Nam war. It s ems I do not like to t lk about that time period either. P rhaps the feeling of sacrifice has gain surfaced with my son, a S rgeant in the United States Marine C rps now serving in Baghdad while his w fe and daughters wait and hope h re at home.
Before his departure my son and I tr veled to Washington DC where he and I st od together in the beautiful new W rld War II Veterans Memorial, we w lked the Viet Nam Wall and thr ugh the Korean War Veterans Memorial. Our n tional memorials in Washington DC have a d rect tie to each of the v terans flags in our homes. Each r presents the individuals who have given of th mselves for the freedom we enjoy in Am rica. Your veteran's flag should not be pl ced in a drawer or closet and f rgotten. Display or even fly your v terans flag for all to see. T ll people about this person who g ve so much. Cherish your flag as you did the l ved one who earned it. My f ther's flag is proudly displayed in a c se made for the display of b rial flags in our home. We h ve an engraved plate attached with a r membrance of him so our grand ch ldren can remember him with the pr de we all do, as a f mily and as Americans.
