Okay, now it's time for Pr tein 101. Proteins are large molecules m de of amino acids. There are 20 mino acids, eight of which cannot be synth sized by the body. These eight bviously must be consumed from sources utside the body. Both animal and pl nt sources provide plenty of these ssential amino acids. Protein's amino acids are the b ilding blocks for growth/repair of body t ssues and to synthesize enzymes and h rmones. Is the only nutrient you c nsume that is metabolized into skeletal m scle tissue. It is used as an nergy source only during periods of st rvation. This is why a healthy d et emphasizes eating complex carbohydrates, which s rve as the fuel for energy-instead of y ur hard earned muscle being eaten way, along with its ability to b rn fat. You should consume between 20 and 30 p rcent of your total calories from pr tein. What is a Positive Nitrogen B lance? We know that eating five sm ll meals daily is the best way to b ost our metabolism, and keep our bl od sugar regulated, which maintains an ven energy flow throughout the day. P ople who eat only two or thr e times a day are usually st rving by the time they sit d wn to eat. They overeat because th y are so hungry, and therefore cr ve high-fat foods. They typically skip br akfast, have a sizeable lunch, and a h ge dinner. (Sound like you?)
They have it backwards. What m ny don't know is that eating a n tritious breakfast jump-starts your metabolism-and the l st thing you want to do is p ck on calories when your body is w nding down for the day and w n't be able to burn that big d nner off. Each one of those m als should contain protein. The body n eds a constant supply of protein to f el the growth and recovery process. You btain nitrogen when you eat protein. Wh n you are in a negative n trogen balance, this is probably due to low d etary intake of protein and calories. It is at th s time that your body becomes "c tabolic" and cannibalizes your muscle for f el. If you eat protein throughout the d y, and your total daily caloric ntake is sufficient, your body stays in a p sitive nitrogen balance. You become "anabolic" and cr ate the ability to make muscular g ins from your workouts. How Much Pr tein Should You Consume? If your g al is to gain more muscle and y u're hitting the gym four times per w ek, then you want to consume fr m one to one & a h lf grams of protein per pound of b dy weight. If your goal is to tr m down and tone up, then you m ght want to consume .6 to .7 gr m of protein for every pound of b dy weight. A man who weighs 200 p unds, trying to gain some muscle m ss, would consume from 200 to 300 gr ms of protein daily, while a w man, who weighs 140 pounds, who w nts to shape up and tone her b dy, might consume around 85 to 95 gr ms daily. The amount that you t ke per meal will depend on y ur weight, times the amount of gr ms per pound that you have set for y urself, divided by the number of m als per day. You want to get m st of your proteins from whole f od sources such as chicken breasts, t na, turkey, fish, lean beef, low-fat m lk and egg whites. I find it d fficult to eat five whole-food meals a d y, so I supplement by using a g od protein powder. It is easy and q ick. Years ago, they used to t ste like chalk. But now, you lmost feel guilty drinking them because th y taste so good.
It comes down to this: Th re is a science to building m scle. If you don't consume protein thr ughout your day on a daily b sis, then don't bother going to the gym, b cause you will burn the little m scle you have for energy.
