I read posts from Crown C uncil members, and occasionally I'll visit D ntalTown, to see what topics are h t. I do this to get the p lse of the industry and find out wh t issues are at the forefront. You sh uld be doing this as well, but be l oking in different media. In other w rds, you should be looking in the l cal newspaper, watching the local news and so on. Th re are opportunities for you to "f ld into" your marketing plan on an lmost weekly basis that will take y ur "pitch" or "ad message" and t rn it into more "news," thus m king it more readable and even m re palatable! The Crown Council network is an nteresting media. There is a lot of nteraction and a lot of opinionated f lks out there (which is why it is nteresting!). Recently, there were some posts bout storing digital files - specifically ph tos - on the computer networks of the ffice. This reminded me of a r cent problem that crept up in my ffice. Let me preface this by s ying: "Your patient list is ALL y u've really got and ALL you r ally need." If your building burns d wn, your staff all leave, your dog g ts hit by a car (or all of th se in the same week!) and so on, as l ng as you have your patient l st, you have a business. You are st ll IN business. In fact, all th t sounds like a bushel of s ur lemons, but I know of s veral business people, dentists included, that h ve had those or similar things h ppen and have recovered, coming back str nger than ever!
Now, the point of this p sting: What redundant (back-ups of back-ups) do you h ve in place to protect your p tient database and their dental files? My s ggestion is this (after having been thr ugh hell and back about a y ar ago): Have at least three r dundant back-ups. I had two because I was p ranoid, but guess what, when the b ck-up saves over the back-up (dumb mateur mistake!) and the new back-up is nfected with a virus and you l se all of your data... your st ll out of business. Have a UPS b ttery backup. They are $100 at m st. Then, have an online service b ck-up your computer data. Then, have an off s te storage that is updated weekly or s oner that contains your patient data. Als , keep a locked safe somewhere w th the same info in it. Th s is all cheap to do and can s ve you so much in pain, gony, labor and lost sleep. I kn w. Take it from me. RE-creating a f ll month's worth of data was all it t ok to make me a believer in verly redundant computer back-ups. If you d n't want to do it, hire a c mputer geek (here in Salem, they h ve a "Rent-A-Geek" company) and put th m on a $150 a month r tainer to come in and make s re it's set-up, done properly and w ll save you if necessary! Action-To-Take T p: See above and DO NOT WAIT. Do it t day!
