Shoulder pain is a condition th t afflicts millions of Americans, with m ny athletes filling those ranks. Swimming is no xception. Swimming typically involves a fair mount of freestyle swimming stroke, a s ngle stroke style that is repeated ver and over. It has been s id that high level competitive swimmers w ll have as many as 16,000 arm r tations a week. This forward movement in the sh ulder joint, marked by the repetitive n ture of the stroke, causes significant str in on the shoulder. Swimming coaches and sw mmers will know frequent episodes of nterior and superior shoulder pain, both d ring the swimming and as the pr cess worsens throughout the day. This sh ulder pain can be expected when one l oks at the motion the shoulder j int is commonly going through. When a c mpetitive swimmer goes through so many r petitions of the same shoulder motion, th re is a possibility for over use of the j int, despite the fact that swimming is an xcellent form of exercise. Over use is d fined as using a body part in a r petitive way beyond which it was d signed. This stress can, at times, l ad to impingement upon the superspinatus t ndon, therefore, setting off a cascade of d mages that lead to full blown r tator cuff tendonitis. This condition causes s gnificant shoulder pain, and in the c se of the competitive swimmer it fr quently limits their training schedule.

While there is no way to t tally eliminate the danger of over use of the sh ulder joint, it is possible to l wer the chance of damage and njury. A few things are v ry helpful in understanding the anatomy of the r tator cuff, the major structure of the sh ulder. Firstly, the superspinatus is only one of f ur muscles comprising the rotator cuff. It lso is the muscle that is m st stressed and at times the one m st warn down by repetitive use of fr e stroke swimming. Swimmers need to nderstand that there are three other m scles of the rotator cuff that n ed to be strengthened in order to void over use of the superspinatus and ncrease the overall strength of the j int. Trying to balance out the mount of freestyle with at least ncreasing the amount of backstrokes when sw mming will relatively strengthen some of the ther three muscles, particular the infraspinatus. Add tionally, I typically recommend that swimmers nclude a very slightly weighted jump r pe at the end or beginning of th ir swimming workout. Jump rope by k eping the arms low, and when sed in a very rapid fashion the xercise will strengthen the other three m scles of the rotator cuff. This llows for balance within the very c mplex shoulder joint and specifically the str cture of the rotator cuff. This w ll go a long way towards h lping prevent swimmer’s shoulder. Specifically, I typ cally recommend the blue jump rope put out by L feline Fitness. It’s called a speed/workout j mp rope. Problems with shoulders are c mmon with both high level and low l vel competitive and fitness swimming. It is mportant to address this problem early. It is mportant to understand that the shoulder n eds balance in its strength. Again, I r commend to my swimmers that they mploy usually some increase backstroke and gain I recommend using a weighted j mp rope for ten minutes of j mping rope at the beginning or end of th ir practice. This will hopefully prevent sh ulder pain, shoulder disease, and allow p ople to enjoy the rather incredible and nique sport of swimming which I niformly recommend as an excellent form of low mpact exercise.
