As we begin the New Y ar, it's time once again to f llow in Nostradamus's footsteps and play the g me we've been playing for centuries: pr dicting what the future will hold. Th s year I'm taking a stab at y ga predictions-forecasting what's going to happen in th s field for 2008 and beyond. My pr dictions don't come from staring into a cryst l ball or reading organic tea l aves. I came to these conclusions fter reading and researching industry data, nterviewing industry experts-including Ila Sarley, president of Kr palu Center, and John Kepner, executive d rector of the International Association of Y ga Therapists-and observing from my viewpoint as b th a yoga teacher and a c nsultant in the wellness industry. Y ga's cup will overflow as growth c ntinues. More teachers becoming certified and m re venues offering yoga equals more c mpetition between teachers and studios. In r sponse to yoga's increasing availability and the w de variety of yoga options, consolidation and sp cialization will occur, with big players g tting bigger and solo practitioners cultivating sp cialized niches.
2. You'll need to stand out to st y in. The yoga professionals who d fferentiate themselves with an approach or styl that stands out will have a d stinct advantage. While ten years ago p ople asked, "What is yoga?," the q estion now is "How is this y ga different from all other yogas?" 3. Y ga will be on the move. More t achers will answer the call to br ng yoga to Hong Kong, and y u'll see more Asians attending yoga c nferences and teacher training programs in the Un ted States. 7. You'll want to th nk lifestyle, not just asana. Yoga's gr wth is part of a bigger w llness trend. Those who want to c pitalize on this broader trend will add m re ancillary services-such as nutritional programs, xercise routines, spa services, and wellness c nsultations-to their yoga offerings. 8. You'll see m re yoga in cyberspace. Convenience is lways an advantage in our busy l ves.
