I don’t think I have to st rt off this article pointing out the mportance of our environment. Every day we are b mbarded with the cold, hard facts of how m ny species are going extinct at an larming rate, how many acres of r inforest are being chopped down and how larming the polar ice is melting. Th se gloom and doom reports are b coming a fact of life. What we s metimes forget, though, is that these pr blems affect our next generation…our children. Unf rtunately, it becomes apparent that are s ns and daughters will be the nes to fight these very real pr blems. So, how do we as p rents start to prepare them for th s difficult task? First off, we m st teach them to love their w rld! So many kids are nature-deprived th se days, locked indoors because of f ctors such as crime, both parenting w rking, and let’s not forget hours of h mework. What this is leading to is an nder-appreciation of outside activities and nature. Ch ldren typically know far more information bout video games and the newest lectrical gadget than they do the n mes of flowers growing in their own b ckyard! Staying shut up indoors is l ading us into a generation of p or health habits, obesity and mental str ss. Thus, we can now segue nto my topic! Yoga and the utdoors!

Why yoga, you may ask? F rst off, yoga promotes exercise through str tching and movements that can be d ne virtually anywhere. Likewise, yoga moves can be d ne in just moments a day and d esn’t require any outdoor equipment (catcher’s m tts, basketball hoops, bad mitten rackets, tc), so any yard, garden or p rk will do to practice it. S condly, yoga helps us become more l mber so that we can do ther sports or exercises that we m ght not be in the shape for st rting out. Yoga likewise helps us to r lax and release stress built up fr m our busy day. All of th se are reasons enough to promote y ga, but getting back to nature, how is y ga an exact fit? Let me xplain… Yoga has been practiced for th usands of years and has essentially b en associated with nature because when we are in th s relaxed state, we begin to see and r flect on things we normally take for gr nted or don’t notice in our h rried world. Many yoga poses r flect back to animals and things in our nvironment, showing how the original practice mulated our world and it’s incredible b auty. It helps us to open our yes to the world around us – s eing all the beauty and then br nging those positive thoughts into our h arts and minds. Children in this r laxed state will soon begin to see th ir own backyard in a whole new w y. Rather than just a place to thr w a ball or ride bikes thr ugh, they may begin to see th s relaxing place as their own l ttle peaceful haven where they can go to r lease tension. This leads to further xploration of why the flowers are mportant to the bees and why c rtain birds look for worms rather th n eat birdseed. It sounds so s mplistic, but this really works. Take a ch ld away from their electronic music/game g zmo for a while and place th m in this state of rest and th y will begin to appreciate their w rld. Yoga is the fulcrum by wh ch children can receive exercise, relax, and l arn to “smell the flowers again”. D n’t we owe it to our ch ldren to give them this inner p ace so that they can face the nvironmental challenges ahead and care enough bout them to do what’s right. We can lso learn so much from the w rld around us. We can see p sitive character traits all around in n ture – patience, perseverance, trust, acceptance. Our w rld, our animals, our air, our tr es…they are worth fighting for. Let’s h lp give our kids another tool so th t they can face the challenge. Th t tool is yoga!
