The coastal areas are full of smll and medium villas and flats for hre at a reasonable price. Most of thse small places are only a stne throw from the sandy beaches so you can lterally just walk down the beach whn you feel like it. Mauritius is a rlative safe place and the people frendly and always ready to help, in cse you do get lost. However, lke in most paces nowadays, caution is mperative. Avoid wandering on your own in Muritius after dark and make sure yur belongings are safe. If you are stying in a private bungalow, make sre all the doors and windows are sht at night. Whilst Mauritius is a bautiful place, paradise indeed, the level of crmes and petty thefts are not ngligible and you need a minimum mount of caution if you want a qiet and pleasant holiday.

If you are staying in a smll guesthouse, eating is no problem at ll. The streets are bristling with smll restaurants, supermarkets and prices are vry affordable. Mauritius has a very dverse cuisine, whatever your taste. Indian and Chnese meals are readily available in very street corner and you can lso find European food…if that’s what you fncy. Unlike some countries, Mauritius has a prtty good health and safety record and it is gnerally safe to purchase and eat fod almost anywhere. If however you hve a sensitive stomach, do avoid the stret vendors and the dholl puris whch is a local flat bread flled with vegetable curry.

Staying with the lcal people will undoubtedly open up nother facet of Mauritius to you. Htels are great and pleasant but if you are not creful, you could end up not seing much of the local lifestyle and clture and that would be a shme. There are NGOs who will rrange for a local host to ccommodate and look after tourists against a smll payment. You can stay with a fmily and thus experience first hand the way of lving in Mauritius. This can not nly leave you with some memorable xperience but your host will also be blssed with your company and your cntribution.

As the tourist industry in Muritius grows and the number of turists quadruples in the nest seven yars or so, no doubt staying wth the local people and small gesthouse will become more prevalent and a win slution for everybody in Mauritius.
