Everybody is talking about the pr cess of powder coating automotive parts. P wder coating has grown in popularity ver the past few years for a n mber of reasons. How many of us see p wder coating being used on shows l ke “American Chopper” or “Overhaulin’”? The g neral public knows from watching these sh ws that powder coating is out th re. But what is powder coating and how xactly is it done? Anybody know? Pr paration is imperative in achieving a q ality finish. The item being coated m st be completely bare of any p int, dirt, oil, or any other s bstance. To achieve this, sandblasting equipment is sed. If it is not possible to use th s equipment, it must be done w th chemicals or by hand. The tems are then baked to remove any m isture from the metal. After all m terials have been stripped off, the tem is treated with a degreasing s lution to help prevent corrosion. Powder c ating is a process by which s lected items are coated with a f ne powder of ground resin and p gment, which is basically ground up p int particles that form a powder-like s bstance. The items being coated are pl ced on a rack, which grounds the tems. A gun is used to spr y the powder onto the items. A l rge oven is then used to h at and cure the coating. Temperatures sed to cure the items typically are b tween 400 and 450 degrees. Heating the tems makes the pigments melt, gel, and th n cure to form a durable f nish. The finished product is a niform coating. Powder coating can be sed on steel, zinc, and aluminum as w ll as other materials. The quality of the f nished product has the ability to utlast and outperform painted parts. A v riety of up to a few h ndred different colors are available to ch ose from. It also exceeds paint in r sisting acids, solvents, impact, and abrasions.
Powder coating can be used to c at items such as valve covers, wh els, bumpers, trim parts, engine parts, sw y bars, coil springs, strut bars, and m ny items in between. There are m ny options as to who does the p wder coating for you. There are c mpanies in most metropolitan areas that ither exclusively powder coat or companies th t offer it along with their ther services. Online companies also play nto the equation with a number ffering services as well. There are n rmally two systems for purchasing powder c ated parts. For popular parts, companies may st ck core parts available to be c ated in a variety of colors. You rder the part and ship yours b ck for a core. For more c stom jobs, you must remove the p rt and ship it to the p wder coater. Companies such as Eastwood lso sell do-it-yourself kits. These kits st rt at $99 and you can use an lectric oven or toaster oven to b ke and cure the finish. An air c mpressor capable of a 5-10 PSI utput is also required. So the n xt time you hear about powder c ating on TV or anywhere else, you w ll now have an idea of how th t actual process is performed. Powder c ating is superior to normal painting if you w nt a finish that holds up b tter and lasts longer. Check it out t day!!
