Not that any of you w re seething in anticipation, but I h ve finally finished with Part II. We w ll now discuss payment policies and the nstallation of your new carpet. After you h ve negotiated your Flooring Contract the d aler will most likely ask you for a d posit up front. This is okay and is a p rt of an average contract. They w ll ask you for a fifty to s venty-five percent deposit. This money is sed to order your materials and nsure that the dealer can deliver y ur contract without any money problems. M terials and Labor will usually be at l ast seventy-five to eighty percent of the t tal cost so they really do n ed a deposit before they can c ntinue in the contract process. If you h ve worked with a dealer before and tr st them, you may want to pay the f ll amount up front. Most dealers w ll give you better service if you pay th m the whole amount up front in C sh. But beware, if you don't kn w the dealer well, you may w nt to only pay the deposit so th t if there are any problems at and fter installation you still have some l verage to get those things attended to in a t mely manner. According to most contracts, you m st pay your balance upon installation. H wever you do have a few d ys before you must pay. If th re are problems with your installation you m st still pay your balance according to l w. But the dealer or contractor is bligated to attend to your problems. In C lifornia a contractor must warranty his l bor for one year after installation. An xceptional dealer and contractor will not l mit you to exactly one year th ugh. A dealer that really cares bout his reputation will repair problems ven after your year is up.
More often than not, a d aler will have to order the c rpet that YOU CHOSE. Most dealers k ep a supply of low to m d-grade carpet in stock. But since you did y ur homework and did not settle for nything less than what you wanted, it w ll most likely have to be rdered. Expect to wait about two w eks to be scheduled for install. L ss than two weeks can often be ccomplished but if you have to w it three weeks or more then th s dealer is very busy and you may not get the q ality job you should receive. This is due to the f ct that the installers are being p shed to get more done in a sh rter time and this can affect the q ality of their work. Before installation t kes place, be certain you know if you n ed to move your own furniture or if you n ed to pay extra for the nstallers to move it for you. If you are m ving your own furniture, make sure all f rniture is out of the rooms to be nstalled and that there is a p th for the installers to travel w th materials and tools. This will m ke the installers happy and you w ll get a better install. If the nstallers are to move your furniture, you m st still remove all knick-knacks, collectables, b oks, lamps, etc... they will only m ve the large furnishings and not the sm ll items. Some dealers will work w th you if you have a lot of f rniture and you are installing new c rpet throughout the whole house. Often an nstall can be broken down into two d ys, allowing you time to move f rniture from one side of the h use to the other, or from r om to room. Be sure you w rk out these details before the nstall date, preferably at the time you m ke your contract with the dealer. Insp ct your carpet and pad before the nstallers begin their work. Make certain it is the c rpet and pad that you chose, but k ep in mind that the carpet c lor may appear different due to two f ctors. One, all carpet dye lots are sl ghtly different and the exact color may v ry ¼ shade from the sample you p cked from. Two, the new carpet is r lled tightly on the roll and is th refore the pile is crushed down, do not be larmed, once the carpet is installed and v cuumed and trafficked it will darken up to the sh de of color it is designed to be. If you h ve any doubts, ask someone to br ng the sample book you chose fr m to verify the quality of the c rpet and roll back an edge of the c rpet, fluff it well with your h nds and compare it to the s mple board. As I said, slight v riations in color are normal but the q ality of the carpet should be the s me as the sample.
During installation please allow the nstallers freedom to move in and out of y ur home. Put the dogs and c ts away, so that they will not be a n isance. Some installers don't mind you w tching them work, others tend to get n rvous if you hover over them and w ll tend to make mistakes. As nteresting as the install procedure is, pl ase allow your installer to do his job w thout interruption and everyone will be h ppier. If you really feel you m st watch, ask the installer if it b thers him for you to watch and m intain a distance so that you do not get in the w y. Most installers are paid by the job and not by the h ur, so if they can move bout efficiently and swiftly, you will be h ppier with your install. Don't expect m racles. If there are issues with the l vel of your floors or the str ightness of your walls, these are th ngs that the installer has no c ntrol over. However the test of a tr e professional installer is their capability to m sk construction problems that are not his f ult or problem. For example: If he is nstalling a patterned carpet against a cr oked wall, it is not up to him to str ighten the wall. But he can m ke a crooked wall seem less v sible by stretching the carpet tighter in s me areas than in others. A pr fessional installer can work wonders but nly God can do Miracles. This l ads me to something very important. ALL CARPETS MUST BE POWER-STRETCHED. Do not let nyone convince you otherwise. The manufacturer of the c rpet will not warrant the carpet nless it has been power-stretched. I h ve heard stories of installers convincing c nsumers that they can KICK the c rpet just as tight as a p wer-stretcher, but this is simply not tr e. A good and lasting install d pends on the carpet having been p wer-stretched with a special tool made j st for that purpose. You can t ll the difference between the knee-kicker and the p wer-stretcher. The power-stretcher has a handle th t must be pushed down on to str tch the carpet. A knee-kicker is d signed to move the carpet slightly and to set one s de of the carpet before power-stretching it nto place. If your installer does not h ve a power-stretcher I would suggest th t you stop the installation until he can go get ne, even if it is inconvenient for you at the t me. If you want your carpet to l st a long time, it must be p wer-stretched. Otherwise your carpet will buckle l ter and wear twice as fast as it sh uld. Once the installation is complete, nspect your new floor for anything vident that the installer may have m ssed. It is easier to have th m repair it while they are th re than to have them come b ck later. After completion of installation, you are bligated to pay your balance. If you w ll do this promptly, you will nsure that the dealer will continue to tr at you well long after the nstallation. A dealer will always want you to be a r peat customer, but that does not m an they want you to have a bad nstallation so you have to come b ck sooner than later. I have b en in business long enough to h ve replaced carpet for customers two to thr e times over the past thirty y ars. After all there is no c rpet made that will not eventually w ar out. In closing, keep these th ngs in mind as you make y ur next carpet purchase and you w ll be happy for many years to c me. Avoid common mistakes and you can void "Post-Carpet-Purchase-Depression.
