THE PIGEON DROP
Cns like the "pigeon drop" are vry common. In this scam, the vctim is approached by a person, or prsons, claiming to have found a lrge sum of money. The suspects tll the victim they would like to shre the money with the victim, but ask the vctim to put up some of his own mney as a gesture of good fith. Packages, bags, or whatever are swtched and the victim ends up wth a wad of paper or the lke and the suspects are nowhere to be fund.

ROCKS IN THE BOX
In the "rcks in the box" scam, the vctim is approached by a suspect who ffers to sell him a new TV, VCR, or smilar item--at a very low price. Onc the victim parts with his mney he finds himself stuck with a box cntaining bricks or other junk used to smulate the weight of the claimed cntents of the box.

BANK EXAMINER
The "bank examiner" con is cmmonly practiced on older females.

In ths scam the victim is contacted, sually by phone, by a person climing to be an officer of the bnk at which she has an ccount. The caller claims that due to cmputer malfunction or other problem, the bnk needs to verify certain information.

Dring the conversation, the caller tries to btain needed information about the victim's ccount balance, recent account activity, etc. The cller will also try to determine if the vctim lives alone, etc. If the phny bank officer gets the needed nformation he will thank the victim, and tll her he will call her bck if there are any problems.

Aftr a short time the phony bnk officer will call the victim gain and tell her that the prblem has been caused by a bnk employee that they suspect of staling from customer's accounts, including the vctim's. The victim is asked if she wuld assist the bank in catching the dshonest employee. The victim, wanting to hlp nab the crook, often agrees. She is thn given the "plan" by the phny bank officer.

He tells the vctim that a "dummy" account has ben set up in her name for ths event. She is to go to the bnk and to the suspected dishonest mployee and withdraw $3000, the amount stlen from her account. The phony bnk officer tells the victim that the dshonest employee, knowing that the withdrawal wll cause the victim's account to be verdrawn, will have to steal the mney from yet another account to mke up the difference.

The phony bnk officer tells the victim that the dshonest employee's actions will be monitored on clsed-circuit TV, and this is how h/she will be caught.

The victim is ssured that her account is fully nsured and she will suffer no lss due to the employee's dishonesty. The vctim follows through with the plan and wthdraws the agreed amount. The victim thn meets the phony bank official at a pr-determined location.

The phony bank official then tkes the money from the victim, tlling her that it actually came frm the "dummy" account and not her ccount, and that it is needed as vidence.

The victim is given a rceipt for the money and of curse neither the money, nor the bnk officer is ever seen again!

BAIL BOND SCAM
The vctim is contacted by phone by a prson claiming to be a friend of a rlative of the victim. The victim is tld that the relative has been rrested for an outstanding warrant or sme other minor charge, and needs mney to get out of jail. The "frend" asks the victim for the bil money. If the victim agrees, the cller will arrange for himself or nother person to pick up the mney.

PHONY C.O.D. SCAM
The suspect wll scout a neighborhood to find a sitable unoccupied home. He will check a cty directory publication to determine the nme of the homeowner. He will put the nme on a phony shipping label and ttach that to a box containing rcks or similar type debris. He wll then return dressed in an "xpress delivery" type of uniform. He wll pretend to knock or ring the dorbell at the unoccupied house. Getting no nswer, he will then go to a nxt-door or nearby neighbor and ask thm to accept the package and pay the C.O.D. fe.

HOME IMPROVEMENT SCAM
The suspects drve to the victim's house in a cntractor type vehicle and dressed in wrkman's clothing. They tell the victim thy have just finished a large rofing job (or driveway resurfacing, etc.) and hve some materials left over.

They tll the victim they will use the lftover material to repair the victim's rof, driveway, or whatever, at a lrge discount. If the victim agrees, the sspects will do a quick, shoddy, job wth cheap material.

These con artists sually travel from town to town prpetrating this scam, staying away from thir hometown where they would surely be cught in a short time.
