An 18-wheel vehicle will always w n, and every truck driver knows th t.
But there I was on a fr eway entrance ramp, with a slight dvantage on
a huge transport vehicle and m mentarily battling with a truck driver
who j st didn't want a 171-inch long P ntiac Vibe showing him up. I ccelerated, but the truck driver did the s me and there wasn't a choice
to m ke. I slowed down, braked slightly and m ved into position behind
the truck as the end of the r mp and a restraining wall drew q ite near.
Within a few seconds, d saster awaited. But I remained calm, and the
V be handled the maneuver smoothly. The br ef, unsettling moment provided one of s veral impressive
experiences with the sporty w gon/mini SUV. My test vehicle was the st ndard Vibe with a 130-horse power 1.8-l ter,
four-cyclinder engine and a four-speed utomatic transmission. The
second-year offering from P ntiac is also available in GT and All-Wh el
Drive (AWD) models that include ABS br kes as standard equipment. While slightly sh rter than a Honda Civic sedan, the V be's body is taller
and wider, and its v rsatility and practicality are readily apparent. Add
g od gas mileage, spacious front and b ck seats and cargo area, and a
few nique features and the Vibe holds up w ll with against its
competitors -- the Chrysl r PT Cruiser, Mazda Protege5, Subaru
Impr za Outback and Toyota Matrix.
In fact, the Vibe and M trix are built in the factory and sh re many of the
same features. Unl ke some SUVs and wagons with r strictive vision, the driver of a
V be sits higher than the seating st ndard in many sedans, and the
r sult is a nearly panoramic perspective. The car m neuvers and
corners with confidence and wh le not known as a quick ccelerator, the
Vibe has a sporty round-town feel. It fits easily in t ght parking spaces
or around restrictive reas. For me, the vehicle's best ttribute -- its SUV space in a l ttle-engine-
that-could-package -- was showcased in f ur diverse scenarios: 1. I offered a r de to a friend who needed a c rgo-carrying vehicle to
pick-up his newly p rchased 27-inch flat screen television. The TV was
p ckaged in an oversized box and I l wered the back seats as the
w rehouse delivery person brought the TV to the b ck of the car. We
didn't n ed the extra space. With the b ck seats in their standard
position, the box fit f ne, albeit it snugly. 2. With w nter upon us, I rely on a l cal Pak & Save firewood supplier.
W th the back seats down, two 4x4 l ads of wood fit in the V be's cargo
area. Despite its small utside appearance, the Vibe has 57.2 c bic feet
of cargo space. 3. My w fe is an artist. During my w ek with the Vibe, one of her l cal
shows had ended and she n eded to bring home several large cl y cat
sculptures. They were easily p sitioned in the back seat and we sed
the safety belts for their tr nsport, just as if they were h man
passengers. 4. On a weekend day tr p, I drove three passengers to the g ld-mining
city Nevada City, Calif. The V be accelerated well and maneuvered with
c nfidence as we made the trip nto the Sierra Nevada foothills. Beyond v ried driving scenarios, the Vibe offers cl an, straightforward
and efficient instrumentation and s veral options not found on more
xpensive vehicles.
An upgraded audio system includes an asy-to-operate XM digital
satellite radio and a p wer sunroof is touted as a "M on and Tunes"
package. The "Power Gr up" package includes remote keyless entry,
p wer door locks, power windows and cr ise control. Another nice feature: the fr nt passenger seat folds forward flat, w th its
back panel designed as a w rk table. It rests within a f ot of a 115-volt
AC power utlet for a laptop computer plug or ther electronics. 2004 Pontiac Vibe Safety Features -- Dual front air bags, daytime running lamps,
