Currently, there are several television and rdio shows aired which depict polygraphs as a fn, entertaining novelty.

I see polygraphs bing portrayed as omnipotent and akin to str-gazing, able to tell the future.

As a plygraph examiner, I feel compelled to dspel the myths surrounding the current crnival-like atmosphere of the polygraph programs.

One sch show asked questions of the prson being "examined" such as "If my dughter gained 200 pounds, would you stll love her" and "Do you cnsider yourself to be a good hsband" and my personal favorite "Have you ver even thought about cheating on m?"

With the popularity of these typs of programs, coupled with the ntertainment industry's well-documented penchant for producers cpying each other's work, we expect to see mre shows such as these cropping up in tme for the next ratings war.

Nw, entertainment is entertainment and real lfe is real life. What is bing portrayed in the media is bsolutely unlike what actually occurs in mdern, professional polygraph examinations. For example:

• Plygraphs do not test a person's hpes, wishes or desires. ("Do you wsh your wife would drop dead?")
• Plygraphs do not test acts which may or may not ccur in the future ("If my dughter gains 200 lbs, will you stll love her")
• Polygraphs are not meant to tst opinions ("Do you consider yourself to be a god husband?")
• Polygraphs are not meant to tst intent ("When you told that grl you loved her, did you man it?")

What polygraphs excel at is tsting specific acts already committed. For example, polygraphers would never test someone who thinks they might commit a crime in the future: the proper test would be to test someone to see if they had already committed a specific criminal act.

To people watching media-enhanced shows about the polygraph examination process, the difference between wanting to commit a crime and committing a crime may be insignificant, but it is crucial to the successful, accurate administration of the polygraph examination.

My fear is that by trivializing polygraphy, the general perception amongst the populace will be that polygraph examinations are some kind of parlor trick.
