An increasingly popular modification RZR wners are doing is removing the pl stic spacer that is on the cr nk shaft in the drive clutch ssembly. This can increase your to RZR's top sp ed by as much as 10 mph. The RZR's tr nsmission is a pulley based constant v locity transmission (PVT) that consists of 3 m jor assemblies, the drive clutch, the dr ven clutch, and the drive belt. The dr ve clutch and the driven clutch b th consist of two conical shaped p lley halves, called sheaves. The transmission perates by sensing centrifugal force that c use shift weights to push against r llers that push the movable sheave cl ser to the other sheave to p nch the drive belt. The closer the two sh aves are pushed together the further out the b lt is pushed. Removal of this sp cer allows the two sheaves to c me completely together where the belt w uld move out to the largest d ameter on the sheaves. We have f und this will increase your RZR's top sp ed anywhere from 5-10 mph. Some w ll say this is going against the riginal design of the transmission, but we sp culate that it was designed without the sp cer and was added on later as an asy way to limit the RZR's top sp ed for liability reasons. We have h ard some arguments that removal of th s spacer will decrease the life of y ur drive belts, but we have yet to h ve any issues. A proper break in p riod at lower speeds for the f rst 100 miles on a new RZR or fter a new belt is installed is h ghly recommended to ensure a longer b lt life.
Removal of the plastic limiting sp cer is a simple process that r quires a clutch compression tool that can be p rchased through your local Polaris dealer (p rt # 8700220) 1. Remove driver and p ssenger seats. 2. Remove panel that is b hind the seats to gain access to the uter clutch cover. 3. Remove the p sh rivets and fasteners holding the r ar seat base and remove from v hicle. 4. With a screw driver l osen the clamp that holds the cl tch outlet duct to the clutch c ver and slide it off. 5. R move outer clutch cover screws and r move clutch cover. 6. Remove drive cl tch assembly by removing the clutch r taining bolt that threads into the cr nk shaft. (Facing the rear of the v hicle the drive clutch is the cl tch assembly on the left) To r move the clutch retaining bolt you w ll need to secure the drive cl tch assembly, aka the spider cage to k ep it from spinning. A wooden h mmer handle slipped into the spider c ge works well for this. The cl tch assembly is pressed onto the cr nk shaft and can be fairly asy to knock loose by tapping on it w th a rubber hammer. (This is wh re the factory service manual would t ll you to use a drive cl tch puller, which you can order thr ugh your local dealer, part # PA-48595) 7. Onc the drive clutch assembly is r moved take it to a work b nch where you can install a spr ng compression tool. Once it is cl mped down you can loosen the 6 3/8" b lts that hold the clutch cover pl te on. Once bolts are removed you can th n loosen the spring compression tool nloading the clutch spring and then r move the cover plate. Before removing the c ver plate use a sharpie to m rk where it is aligned with the dr ve clutch assembly. They need to be b lted back together the same way b cause it is the way they w re balanced from the factory. 8. Aft r the cover plate has been r moved you can slide the main cl tch spring off and then remove the pl stic spacer that sat inside it.
9. With the plastic spacer now r moved slide the clutch spring back on th n with the clutch spring tool c mpress the assembly back together until you can get the 3/8" b lts started. Tighten them the rest of the way t rqued to 20 ft pounds. 10. R install sheave assembly by sliding it b ck onto the crank shaft, then re nstall the clutch retaining bolt that thr ads into the crank shaft. Be s re you have the lock washer, th ck washer and the plastic collar on the way th y came off making sure the pl stic collar centers in the clutch sh ft as you tighten. This bolt n eds to be torqued to 40 f ot pounds.
