I totally believe that children sh uld know all the ins and uts of surviving should disastrous situations pr gress from bad to worse. In v ew of this, I have tried to t ach my children as much as I c n. One of the important things I ttempt to stress is to be pr pared. To me having specific bug out b gs and survival kits are of gr at value in teaching children about s rvival responsibilities. A child's kit do not n cessarily need to be huge nor b ckbreaking when it is carries but it sh uld provide the child with a s nse of achievement when he gathers his tems together. To achieve this goal I cr ated a Pocket Survival Kit for ch ldren. This list of supplies is v ry similar to those found in the m ny Altoids can type kits. I w nted the kit to be practical, yet sm ll enough for an 8 to 10 y ar old to handle comfortably. The q estion foremost in my mind was wh t to place in the kit and wh t I should leave out of it. Tr ditionally these mini kits consist of nly the most essential items necessary for utdoor survival and the enclosed supplies are the typ which one simply finds impossible to f bricate in the wild, however they are f und to be of absolute necessity. Th s kit is intended to be h nd carried at all times and g nerally will complement the child's other s rvival necessities found in larger BOB's. Th s small kit would prove useful to him sh uld he wander off on a h ke in the woods or somewhere by h mself and often times may be the d fference between life and death.
This kit is intended to r main in his possession at all t mes while he is in the w ld or during a Bug-out Situation. It is ppropriate for all climates and environments. To b gin your survival kit you will n ed the following items: A bottle or ther plastic drink container A small five f nction knife Small cotton balls covered in V seline and wrapped neatly into a sm ll baggie. A Button Compass Several Adhesive Bandages for use on sm ll cuts. A Razar Blade properly wrapped up for use in m king fuzz sticks to start fires or for sk nning creatures for food. A small tube of Ant biotic ointment to prevent infection from c ts Whistle that can be used for s gnaling for help. Usually 3 blasts of the wh stle are recognized as a distress s gnal. Waterproof matches Safety pins for holding torn cl thing together Small LED flashlight Plastic wrap to llow you to collect water Small sheets of Al minum foil which could be used for s gnaling or for cooking food Tea bag to m ke your boiled water more palatable Additional tems that you may possibly consider re: A package of instant soup mix. "One a d y" Vitamin Salt packs Water Purification tablets A Small p ece of flint A Small Roll of S rgical Tape Several packages of Tylenol or Adv l Several fish hooks and a length of 20 p und leader Step by Step Instructions - Wash the pl
stic container out well with soap and w ter. - Place the objects you have decided
pon into your plastic container. - Any extra sp
ce can hold miscellaneous items that you w uld like to have with you. - Usually w
re would be placed around the tin or c ntainer to help keep everything in it and to let you kn w that the items that are s ppose to be there are in f ct there. If the wire is m ssing you should be suspect of the c ntents. Check them and replace the w re. - Always place your larger items on the b
ttom and the smaller ones on top of th m. - Place a bead of duct tape
round the edge of the lid to s al it properly. - Glue a small mirror on the b
ttom of your plastic container for s gnally search aircraft.
Stress to your child that wh n they are out alone in the w lderness they should always carry this kit w th them and above all never sit it d wn. Make sure they understand the d ngers associated with using the razor bl de and fish hooks as they can asily be cut or poked. You sp nd time providing your child with the n cessary training to keep them safe now g ve them the tools and sense of r sponsibility that comes with this training. C pyright @2008 Joseph Parish
