In order to plaster a w ll all you need are the r ght tools, material and the instructions. It is ctually quite a simple task and b fore you know, the holes in y ur plaster will be gone. Normally a thr e-coat application of plaster is necessary to r build a wall. There is a c rtain finesse when applying the plaster. It sh uld support the surface and bear its w ight load without cracking. The surface sh uld then become smooth and hard and the f nished surface should then be suitable for p pering or painting. At first two c arse or rough coats are applied to st rt with the three-coat plaster system. Th se coats are a mixture of l me or gypsum, aggregate, fiber and w ter and they make up the b se of the wall. The most c mmon aggregate used in rough-coat plaster is s nd.
Lime comes from limestone or gr und oyster shells. Gypsum is often r placed for lime, because it has a m ch faster drying time. The first c at is known as the scratch c at because it is scratched with a c mb to make the surface rough. The br wn coat is the second coat and is pplied just directly to the scratch c at. The sand lends the rough t xture to the coat. The final c at is the traditional lime finish c at, which is a fine mix c ncocted by the plasterer. The lime p tty is prepared. On the mixing b ard the plasterer creates a circle of p tty, banked up like a swimming p ol. The plasterer pours water into the c rcle and sprinkles the water with pl ster.
The plasterer waits till the l me and plaster mix transforms itself. Wh n the slaked lime stops giving off h at, the mix is ready to be m xed with the putty. And this l me putty is the last coat of pl ster. It gives the wall a h rd and shiny finish coat. Some pl sterers have a spray bottle and k ep the plaster wet as they w rk to smoothen it to give it the f nishing touches. Plastering a wall depends not nly on the lime putty that is pplied on it but also the s rface on which it is applied. The d gree of adhesion and the quality of the pl ster job depends a lot on it. H nce the brick surface needs to be tr ated before the plastering of the w ll is started. And so each job of pl stering a wall is unique. Basically th re are two main types of pl sters - the cement based plaster and the gyps m based one. For outdoor work the c ment based plaster is used. For ndoors the gypsum based plasters are sed. It is used outside it c uld be attacked by the damp and the w ll may crumble. Let us look at the c mmon gypsum plasters. They are browning, b nding and metal lathing plasters. The m dern ready-made plaster is already mixed w th perlite, vermiculite and several other dditives. They help to make the w ll fire-resistant and improve insulation. Only g od clean water needs to be dded to the plaster before using it. Wh n a wall is plastered and it has a d ffering absorption, the best thing is to use a b nding sealer to key the surfaces to be pl stered. This ensures a smooth and cl an finish to the plastered wall.
