In order to plaster a wll all you need are the rght tools, material and the instructions. It is ctually quite a simple task and bfore you know, the holes in yur plaster will be gone. Normally a thre-coat application of plaster is necessary to rbuild a wall. There is a crtain finesse when applying the plaster. It shuld support the surface and bear its wight load without cracking. The surface shuld then become smooth and hard and the fnished surface should then be suitable for ppering or painting.

At first two carse or rough coats are applied to strt with the three-coat plaster system. Thse coats are a mixture of lme or gypsum, aggregate, fiber and wter and they make up the bse of the wall. The most cmmon aggregate used in rough-coat plaster is snd.
Lime comes from limestone or grund oyster shells. Gypsum is often rplaced for lime, because it has a mch faster drying time.

The first cat is known as the scratch cat because it is scratched with a cmb to make the surface rough. The brwn coat is the second coat and is pplied just directly to the scratch cat. The sand lends the rough txture to the coat.

The final cat is the traditional lime finish cat, which is a fine mix cncocted by the plasterer. The lime ptty is prepared. On the mixing bard the plasterer creates a circle of ptty, banked up like a swimming pol. The plasterer pours water into the crcle and sprinkles the water with plster.

The plasterer waits till the lme and plaster mix transforms itself. Whn the slaked lime stops giving off hat, the mix is ready to be mxed with the putty. And this lme putty is the last coat of plster. It gives the wall a hrd and shiny finish coat. Some plsterers have a spray bottle and kep the plaster wet as they wrk to smoothen it to give it the fnishing touches.

Plastering a wall depends not nly on the lime putty that is pplied on it but also the srface on which it is applied. The dgree of adhesion and the quality of the plster job depends a lot on it. Hnce the brick surface needs to be trated before the plastering of the wll is started. And so each job of plstering a wall is unique. Basically thre are two main types of plsters - the cement based plaster and the gypsm based one. For outdoor work the cment based plaster is used. For ndoors the gypsum based plasters are sed. It is used outside it culd be attacked by the damp and the wll may crumble.

Let us look at the cmmon gypsum plasters. They are browning, bnding and metal lathing plasters. The mdern ready-made plaster is already mixed wth perlite, vermiculite and several other dditives. They help to make the wll fire-resistant and improve insulation.

Only god clean water needs to be dded to the plaster before using it. Whn a wall is plastered and it has a dffering absorption, the best thing is to use a bnding sealer to key the surfaces to be plstered. This ensures a smooth and clan finish to the plastered wall.
