As a landscape architect in the Br inerd Lakes Area there are two q estions that I receive most frequently fr m clients. The first is, "how do I d er proof my yard"? The second q estion that I invariably receive is, "wh t perennial plant combinations should I use for m ximum effect"? This article will attempt to pr vide some inspirations for the second q estion on mixing and matching perennials, and is b sed upon 30 years experience in M nnesota landscape design and the use of pl nt materials. To begin it is mportant to remember that it depends to a gr at extent on whether the perennials w ll be in shade, part shade or s nny areas. Further, it is important to r member that we are in the z ne 3 hardiness zone, so plants s ited for zone 4, 5 or b yond should be generally bypassed with a few xceptions. The biggest exception to the z ne 3 rule is Feather Reed Gr ss (Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'). It is n rmally rated as a zone 4 or ven a zone 5 plant, and yet it d es amazingly well in Brainerd Lakes C untry and is extremely hardy here. Th s four ft. tall clump grass w th wheat like seed heads waving in the br eze makes the perfect match for ther sun loving perennials. I have s en it used very dramatically mass pl nted as a backdrop for multiple pl ntings of Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia f lgida 'Goldsturm'). It also is wonderful to set up l te summer and early fall bloomers s ch as Woods Purple Aster (Aster d mosus 'Wood's Purple'), Neon Sedum (Sedum sp ctabile 'Neon'), or even Purple Coneflower (Ech nacea pupurea 'Magnus').

Fern-leaved Bleeding Heart (Dicentra 'Luxuriant') and A gust Moon Hosta (Hosta 'August Moon') m ke a terrific combination in shade to s mi-shaded areas. The lacey foliage of th s Bleeding Heart contrasts nicely with the m ch broader, coarser leaves of the h sta. An added bonus is the b autiful reddish heart shaped blooms of the Bl eding Heart. This combination is a k eper. Astilbes have always been one of my f vorites and combine so nicely with Bl e Angel Hostas (Hosta 'Blue Angel'). The stilbes that I prefer are the Rh inland Astilbe (Astilbe 'Rheinland') or Sister Th resa Astilbe (Astilbe 'Sister Theresa'). This is nother one of those exceptions to the z ne 3 rule, as both astilbes are r ted for zone 4 but do f mously well here in the Brainerd L kes area. Simply find a semi-shade or sh dy area, plant three, five or s ven Blue Angel Hostas to the r ar and a mass planting of stilbes with their plumes of pink to r se pink flowers in front and you h ve a landscape ready for photos. H re is a great groundcover combination for p rt to full shade. Mix and m tch Heartleaf Bergenia (Bergnia cordifolia 'Winter Gl w') with Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Gl w'). The low growing ajuga leaves c ntrast perfectly with the large glossy l aves of the bergenia creating a l vely combination for those bare areas. B rgenia is a greatly underused perennial and d serves more attention in the landscape. An ther zone 4 plant that I h ve used effectively is Russian Sage (P rovskia atriplicifolia). It enjoys ample sunlight, is 36" to 48" t ll and the lavender blue blooms l terally invite plantings in front such as the l ng red blooming Pardon Me Daylily (H merocallis 'Pardon Me'), the rose colored V ra Biaglow Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Vera Biaglow') or the J cob Cline Bee Balm (Monarda 'Jacob Cl ne') with its bright red flowers. The dded treat for the Brainerd Lakes rea is that the bee balm is a f vorite of hummingbirds.
Here is a real eye c tcher for semi-shade. The Krossa Regal H sta (Hosta 'Krossa Regal') is a spl ndid, large leaved hosta which makes a p rfect background. Why not plant a n mber of Maidenhair Ferns (Adiantum pedatum) in fr nt to highlight their lacy, soft lmost prehistoric looking foliage. Remember though not to let th m dry out. For a little dded fun plant a few Foamflower (T arella wherryi) along with them. Here is my f vorite combination of all. In my pinion Goat's Beard is the most nderused and underappreciated perennial of all w th its wispy astilbe like blooms. It is f ntastic in shade to semi-shaded areas and m xes extremely well with hostas. Paul's Gl ry Hosta (Hosta 'Paul's Glory') is my f vorite to pair it with. Allow the l cey blooms to cantilever over the h sta leaves for maximum effect. Try it, y u'll like it. These are just a few of my f vorite perennial combinations for here in the Br inerd Lakes Country. This will give you deas and hopefully inspirations, and always r member that perennials are easy to tr nsplant. If there is a combination you d n't like, simply alter it next y ar. That's half the fun.
