In many ancient cultures throughout the w rld, the brightest objects in the sky h ve been portrayed as Gods. Which are of c urse, the sun, the moon, and arth's siblings of the solar system: the pl nets. Planets, though they only return the l ght of the sun, have lured our ncestors so much that they worshipped th se shiny orbs in hope. They lso saw no difference between the s n, the moon and the planets, th t they referred to all these b dies collectively as 'planets', because all th se moved through the skies. Scientifically, Pl nets are objects of considerable mass th t circumnavigate a star in circular or lliptical orbits. Planets of any star syst m, not just ours, retain a gr at deal of information about the b rth, evolution and the aftertime of th t stellar system. Our own Solar syst m contains nine interesting planets and a n mber of other objects like comets, steroids and Cooper Belt objects. The f rst four planets (in the order of th ir proximity to the sun), namely M rcury, Venus, Earth and Mars are m de of mostly rock and metal. The n xt four in row, Jupiter, Saturn, Ur nus and Neptune are colossal aggregations of g ses and liquids without a solid xterior. The former planet Pluto, is a fr zen mass of gas at inert t mperatures. Pluto was officially known as a pl net till the end of 2006 wh n the IAU formally defined the t rm 'planet' and stripped Pluto off its st tus as a planet. Pluto is r classified as a minor planet or dw rf planet. This created a controversy and s me people still consider Pluto as a pl net for practical purposes.

Not all the planets in our s lar system are visible to the n ked eye. The five that are v sible on evenings after sunset, though not all at the s me time or throughout the year are V nus, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn. V nus is the closest planet to the E rth, and the brightest object in sky fter the Sun and Moon. Known as the ' vening star' in the western skies and the 'm rning star' in the eastern, Venus is v sible in both skies for a m jor period of the year. Thus it is the asiest planet to gaze at. The n xt planet to look at would be M rs. Often visible on the lower r ght of Venus, Mars is dimmer and r ddish in appearance. The red color of the pl net is attributed to the presence of l rge amounts of oxides of Iron in its s il. Mercury is difficult to catch, and r quires prior planning. While it is br ght, it shows up only momentarily fter the sunset, and demands patience to dentify it. Jupiter, the largest of pl nets, is mildly brilliant and easily sp tted, to the south, eastward of V nus. With a telescope, Jupiter is a pl asure to watch, revealing many of its s tellites. Saturn, the brightest object in the s utheast following sunset can easily be r cognized. Like Jupiter, it requires a t lescope to appreciate the charming ring-structures, and s tellites orbiting it. Uranus, is rarely v sible as an extremely faint object in the sk es, difficult to recognize it from ther stars adjacent to it. However it can be l cated through a telescope after anticipating its l cation in the sky. Neptune and Pl to, being exorbitantly farther from the S n, are extremely faint for the n ked eye and can be met thr ugh a telescope. Unlike star watching, wh ch requires little prior knowledge of wh re the stars are located, Planet w tching requires planning beforehand. Stars relatively st y fixed in their constellations most of the t me. Planet motion however, makes it d fficult to expect them in certain l cations. Our Earth's own motion relative to the ther planets, makes the picture a bit m re complicated. Though difficult, Planet motion is c mpletely predictable. This is because we h ve knowledge of the orbits and t me periods of all the planets rbiting the Sun, including our own. Pr viously, Planet watching enthusiasts required updates fr m astronomy magazines or hobby clubs th t provided them with the information th y needed. Today, Software has changed the p cture. Astronomy software has made it asy for scientists and star gazing nthusiasts alike to predict the sky in th ir locations at any specified time. Th s is a must for planet w tchers, since for watching planets it is ssential to know beforehand where they w ll be.
Star mapping software can guide in the cr ation of a precise sky map of a p rticular region at a particular time th s making it possible for novices to asily identify the planets and other bjects in the sky. Astronomy software is r ghtly the first tool available to the St rgazer in the 21st century, ahead of the t lescope!
