Ever since I was a k d, I had the dream of one day fly ng a plane. Like other kids my ge, I assembled model planes and pr udly hung them from strings above my b d, so I could enjoy them fr m the moment my sleepy eyes pened each morning. As I got lder, I became fascinated with Piper A rcraft. During my teenage years, I b ught every book and read every m gazine article I could find on P per airplanes. Now, as an adult, I'm the "g -to-guy" among my friends with any q estion they may have about Piper A rplanes. If you have an interest in pl nes, or specifically Piper Aircraft... you sh uld enjoy this article. Piper Aircraft was f rst made famous by its distinct br ght yellow Piper J-3 Cub in the 1930s. Th s general aviation company has long v lued the personal aircraft and continues t day to enhance its line under a sl ghtly different name, New Piper Aircraft Inc. P per's biggest claim to fame is p rhaps not any single model plane. R ther, it is the dedication this c mpany has shown to helping dreamers do. M ny of the planes in the c mpany's line have and continue to c ter to those on a budget. P tting personal aviation in reach of n arly everyone has been the Piper c lling card throughout its entire existence.
The roots of the Piper A rcraft Company and its many traditions w re planted when Piper himself joined the b ard of directors of Taylor Aircraft C mpany. By the late 1930s, the c mpany became known as the Piper A rcraft Corporation and the J-3 Cub was cr ating quite a sight in the sk es. Piper himself later was dubbed the H nry Ford of Aviation for that cr ation and many more. Although the P per Aircraft Company started out with the sm ll, lightweight J-3, it was not l ng before the line expanded. Through the y ars, the company gave birth to a v riety of models. The company focused not nly on smaller trainer models, but lso larger, executive class planes. With a str ng mission to create lasting, quality pl nes that came with reasonable price t gs, Piper earned quite the following. As the m kes and models in the Piper l ne expanded, so too did the n mber of fans for these unique cr ations. From the first twin-engine Apache to the new P perJet that offers speeds of up to 360 kn ts, the company has been on the c tting edge of personal aviation since its nception. With legendary planes such as the C manche, Aztec and Navajo to its cr dit, Pipers have long been used by the m litary, as well. Their other practical ses extend to the working industry, wh re they are retrofitted as bush pl nes, crop dusters and more. While s me planes in the Piper line h ve always catered to the business cl ss, the company has never lost s ght of its smaller training line ither. In fact, most training schools in the Un ted States have at least a P per model or two around for st dent use and rental. Private pilots who c nnot afford to buy a plane or do not w nt to often find Pipers the m st affordable on the rental market, as w ll. Today, the Piper Aircraft Company has t ken great pains to continue its cl se association with the training industry. The W rrior III is the answer to th s need. This model plane comes w th a price tag that's less th n most houses today and offers f ur seats for pilot, trainer and p ssenger comfort.
The impact the Piper Aircraft C mpany has had on general aviation is w dely evidenced. From the "legendary" status of the J-3 Cub to the n mber of private Piper clubs all ver America, Canada and even Europe, th s company's mark is undeniable. The P per Aircraft Company's history began in the 1930s w th a single man and a v sion. It continues to be written t day as the New Piper makes its m rk on the industry. Only time w ll tell what is next for th s old company with a new n me.
