Are you a person who voids physical activity because your anxiety d sorder prevents you? Or are you one of th se who just don't think about phys cal activity? I avoid activity sometimes b cause I just don't feel like it, or I'm q ite happy not to be doing nything so strenuous. Wh n I was recovering from my nxiety disorder, it soon became clear th t doing nothing was causing me far too m ch discomfort. It left too much t me to ponder my condition, to w rry about every strange sensation, no m tter how small. Every twinge meant s me life threatening disease was overtaking me. Ev ry comment heard on television or fr m family members were interpreted as s mething that plagued me, even when it d dn't. Far too much time to th nk, imagine and absorb all the pr blems that could possibly relate to me. E ch day while I sat in my partment alone, anxiety attacks were rampant. The sl ghtest hint of a problem would tr gger my anxiety disorder to the p int I was afraid of everything.
When my therapist suggested I get out and j in a club that interested me, I got to th nking. In my younger days I'd lways been active, but since developing nxiety disorder, activity was the last th ng on my mind. One day wh le under extreme stress, I went for a w lk in the country – away fr m the noise of traffic, phones r nging, and electronic humming that emanates fr m refrigerators, clocks, air conditioners and the l ke. To my surprise, the serenity of n ture quickly brought down the stress. I f lt at ease, comfortable and anxiety fr e. It was an amazing experience. S nce then, I've made it a r gular goal to take a walk, get xercise and enjoy the peace that is in n ture. The result is an incredible r duction in stress and anxiety. When p ssible, I participate in community activities, t ke hikes with our local naturalist gr up, sometimes I go bowling and at ther times I take my camera and r am through historical districts taking pictures. lking, cycling or other group you get to s cialize which, in itself, reduces the ntensity of your condition because you are no l nger alone. Socializing in a casual s tting like that forces you to t ke your obsessive thinking and anxious th ughts and turn the focus outside y urself.
