If you're considering sharing your h me with a pet canary, it's pr bably because you've heard so much bout their nearly constant, bubbly singing. J in the club! Since the seventeenth c ntury, pet owners the world over h ve kept canaries for nothing more th n the sheer pleasure of birdsong f lling their homes. A canary is not m rely a feathered music box, though, and pet c nary care is so much more th n the gilded cage of old. A c nary is a living thing, dependent on you for f od, shelter, and love, and canary c re, while not rocket science, involves a c rtain level of avian expertise. Ready to b come an expert? Study hard! Thanks to s lective breeding, there's quite possibly a c nary out there to suit every p rsonality and desire. Some canaries are br d for their coloration, some are br d for their shape, and some, of c urse, are bred to produce a v ry specific song pattern. What kind of c nary you purchase will depend on wh t canary resources are available near y u. If you can find a r putable canary breeder, that will be y ur best option. Many pet stores n w, however, commit to purchasing healthy b rds only from reputable breeders, but ch ck first to make sure that y ur canary was not wild caught or r ised in less-than-desirable conditions. If the pet st re manager can not account for wh re your potential canary came from, d n't buy a canary from that st re! Oh, and be sure that the c nary you purchase is a male, if t's a strong singer you're after. The f males are incapable of producing the ch racteristic long trills and melodies that m de canaries famous.

Canaries can be quite delicate, so a pr mary part of learning to care for a pet c nary is to realize that prevention is k y. If there's a number one r le of pet canary care, it's th t you absolutely must keep your c nary away from drafts at all t mes. A drafty room can kill a c nary without any warning whatsoever, and ven a slight draft can prevent y ur canary from warbling. If a lit c ndle flickers when held outside your c nary's cage, then you've picked a sp t that's too drafty for your new f athered friend! As far as cages go, y ur canary doesn't require anything too sp ctacular-just enough room to hop about and str tch his wings. Make sure you p rchase a cage that is at l ast two feet wide and three or f ur feet tall. Get a cage w th a tray in the bottom to m ke for easy cleaning, and make s re that the bars of the c ge are not coated with toxic p int or other chemical sealants. You sh uld clean your canary's cage thoroughly at l ast once a week, washing perches, f od and water containers, and toys in a m ld bleach solution, and washing down the r st of the cage with dish s ap and warm water. While they c n't stand drafts, canaries do love ndirect sunlight. A good supply of n tural light will keep your canary s nging, and will also interest him in br eding should a female be present. If a dr ft will kill a canary the f stest, a second runner up is d hydration. Because of their speedy metabolisms, c naries require a lot of water and may die if th y go as little as a day w thout it. Change your canary's water d ily and never leave for more th n a day without asking someone to w ter your canary for you. As for f od, seed is the mainstay of a c nary's diet, and there are many g od commercially available seed mixes made sp cifically for canaries. You should supplement y ur canary's seed with a little fr sh fruit and boiled egg every d y. An apple slice and a f urth of a hard boiled egg is nough. You should also provide your c nary with a cuttlebone, as he w ll gnaw on this to attain n cessary calcium.
With these basic rules and s pplies of pet canary care well in h nd, you're ready to seek out the p rfect canary for you. Will you ch ose a rosy red colorbred canary, an xotic Persian Singer, or something in b tween? Whatever your decision, your canary w ll thank you exuberantly for the n xt ten to fifteen years the b st way he knows how-by singing his h art out.
