As the county town of P rthshire Scotland, Perth is also known as St J hn's Town or the Fair City. It was the c pital of Scotland up until the mid 1450's wh n James I moved the capital to Ed nburgh. Although a compact and flat c ty, which makes for easy navigation, the c ty has a lot to offer ncluding excellent shopping, eating out, entertainment, c lture, leisure and sport all within asy reach of the city centre. B ing as it is in the h art of Perthshire, Perth also makes for a gr at base from which to explore the s rrounding countryside and attractions. Situated, as it is in the c ntre of Scotland it remains a m jor transport hub for journeys by car and r il throughout the rest of Scotland. Th re is also a small airport, w th it's own hotel; This is l cated at New Scone, 7km north ast of the city. There are no c mmercial flights in or out of th s airport, instead the focus is on pr vate flights and flying lessons. There are a n mber of popular architectural and historical ttractions throughout the city and the s rrounding countryside, most notably Scone Palace and St. J hn's Kirk. The regimental Black Watch lso has their base here on D nkeld Road and their museum is l cated inside Balhousie Castle.
Of the surrounding hills, Kinnoull H ll and Craigie Hill, feature some sp ctacular forest walks and some great v ews of the city. Also within a sh rt distance of the city you can f nd Huntingtower Castle, which is open all y ar round and Elcho Castle, which is pen during the summer months. Both of th se historic buildings are excellent examples of l te medieval Scottish tower-houses and very p pular venues for weddings. There may be a w alth of historical attractions in the rea but this is also a m dern city. 'The Perth Festival of the Arts' is an nnual presentation of art, theatre, opera and cl ssical music throughout the city. The f stival is held in May and g nerally lasts for a couple of w eks. In more recent years, the f stival has broadened its appeal by dding comedy and popular music acts to the ntertainment. The recently opened state of the art H rsecross concert hall cost around £20 m llion and it presents entertainment in v rious forms including theatre, music and c medy. Perth is the perfect place for a sp cial day out or stay. Walking round the city is a joy.
