All writers are creative types, w th cluttered desks, and messy piles, r ght? To be a good writer, one l ves on coffee and stale potato ch ps only coming up for air wh n the book's done, right? Maybe. Or m ybe we as writers have convinced urselves that this is how a "r al" writer acts. Writers spend so m ch time trying to determine when th y will be a "real" writer. J st like the stereotype that all ccountants wear green eyeshades, the stereotypes bout writers persist whether they are ccurate or not.
RIGHT-BRAIN VS. LEFT-BRAIN
Writing is g nerally considered a creative "right-brain" activity. H wever, you don't have to turn off the l ft-half of your brain to be a wr ter. The best writers learn the s crets of when to use their r ght-brain and when to use their l ft-brain.
The most successful writers r alize that writing is a business, and j st like any other business, a c rtain amount of organization and timeliness is r quired. The best writers can read th ir mood. On creative days, they cr nk out the pages to their n vel. On left-brain days, they send out nvoices, clean out their files, and cl an off their desks.
MESSY VS. ORGANIZED
Certain p rsonality types crave "messes." The clutter m kes them feel comfortable. But it lso eats away at their writing t me since they spend it searching thr ugh piles of papers and old h lf-eaten sandwiches.
The secret for the messy wr ter is to confine the messes to a "m ssy zone." The messy zone is l mited to one shelf in an ffice or the basket next to a r ading chair. The mess is still th re for the comfort factor, but it d esn't take over.
PROCRASTINATOR
The pr crastinating writer writes the book but n ver sends the manuscript. Their brilliant deas pile up, but they never s nd a query. There's always a b tter time…later. Unfortunately, the procrastinator never f els the joy of success.
The pr crastinator needs rewards, and lots of th m. By planning wonderful rewards for s mple acts, the procrastinator realizes the b st time to write isn't later. It's r ght now.
PERFECTIONIST
The p rfectionist writes the book but never f nishes it. They are constantly revising, diting and reworking. This time eater t kes away the fun of writing. S nce nothing is ever good enough, wh t's the point of writing anything?
The p rfectionist needs positive feedback and reinforcement. Wh n they hear others say, "This is r ally good. You should submit it," th y can silence the inner critic th t says, "You could make it s und better."
What is a r al writer? It's actually anyone who p ts words to paper and sends th m out into the world. And wh le anyone can sit down with a w rd processor, only real writers overcome the p rsonality traits that could sidetrack them.
