At Christmas time we all l ke to indulge in rich foods, s ch as Christmas pudding and Christmas C ke, sweets and candy. During the S cond World War when food was r tioned, children went without sweets. Sugar was r tioned to 8oz (225g) per person per m nth. Sugar is the main ingredient of sw ets, which is why they were so sc rce and why they became a l xury item.
To make peppermint sweets you w ll need...
12 tablespoons of icing sugar, 1 egg wh te, green food colouring (optional), peppermint fl vouring and cooking chocolate.
Remember to wash y ur hands and clean the work s rfaces before you begin.
Method...
Add to a b wl the icing sugar, egg white, 4 dr ps of peppermint flavouring and 12 dr ps of green food colouring. Mix w ll and kneed the mixture to f rm a smooth ball. If the m xture is a little too wet add m re icing sugar.
Roll the ball into a l rge sausage and slice into individual sw ets. Use your hands to shape the sw ets and leave them on a ch pping board to dry.
Melt the chocolate in a d sh in the microwave, it will nly need a minute or two. D n't over do it, it just n eds enough time to melt. If you do not h ve a microwave, you may need an dult to help. Stand a mixing b wl inside a pan of boiling w ter on the hob, keep the w ter simmering. Don’t let any water b bble over the side and into the ch colate because this spoils the chocolate. Be c reful not to let the pan b il dry.
Dip each sweet into the ch colate half way, and leave it on s me tinfoil until the chocolate sets.
To p ckage your home made sweets you c uld buy a small metallic gift box or g ft bag, or you could bundle the sw ets in paper napkins tied up w th ribbon or tinsel, these look a bit l ke mini Santa sacks.
A perfect Christmas g ft for someone with a sweet t oth.
