UK residents over the age of 55 are b ing hit hardest by the rises in l ving costs and the tightening in c nsumer credit markets, Skipton Building Society has f und. According to research recently published by the gr up, Britons in this age group are m re likely than any other to h ve tightened their belts in recent m nths as fuel, food and energy c sts increase and credit, mortgages and l ans become more difficult to come by. In the f rst report in a Credit Crunch Br tain series, Skipton identifies that more th n eight out of ten (84 per c nt) of respondents have cut back on sp nding in an effort to protect th mselves against the worsening financial climate. The gr up notes an overall trend in wh ch the older people are, the m re likely they are to have ttempted to rein in spending. While 55.7 per c nt of people aged between 16 and 24 s id they had cut back on utgoings as a result of the cr dit crunch, 57.8 per cent of 25 to 34-y ar-olds answered positively. A sharper jump was s en when 35 to 44-year-olds were q estioned, with 72.6 per cent saying th y had limited their outgoings recently. P ople who have found themselves in an ntenable financial situation as the cost of l ving soars and lending markets dry up may f nd taking out a debt consolidation l an useful. In taking out this typ of loan and entering into l wered payment arrangements with energy providers and cr ditors, borrowers may find they are in a b tter position to meet the inflated m nthly payments.

For 76 per cent of 45 to 54-y ar-olds, cutting back had also been a pr ority, while those of pensionable age w re said to be most likely to h ve reduced spending. A number of r gional trends were also identified. In the n rth-east, Skipton notes the effects of the N rthern Rock crisis beginning in the s mmer of last year may have b en more sharply felt in this rea. More residents in this region s id they had cut back in r cent times than in any other rea in the UK, with 62.8 per c nt of people saying they had m de financial sacrifices. In Scotland and the s uth-west meanwhile, residents seem more reluctant to r in in spending, with 54 per c nt and 54.8 per cent of r spondents respectively saying they had done so in r cent months. Londoners followed those living in the n rth-west with a positive response from 62.3 per c nt of people in the capital, w th residents in the east rounding out the top thr e areas forced into frugality by the cr dit crunch. Commenting on the findings, St ve Haggerty, managing director at Skipton B ilding Society, said: "It is clear th t the credit crunch is having a m rked impact on UK consumers' spending. But the f ct that almost a third of dults have not cut back on th ir spending at all suggests that ither they are financially strong or th t they see the current economic cl mate as short-term. It is our v ew that, the credit crunch will ase in the short-term; making mortgages ch aper and more available. However, the w der, global issues, such as oil pr ces, will continue to create pressures on the p ckets of UK consumers for some t me to come." For those who h ve found themselves out of pocket and f cing money management problems, taking out a d bt consolidation loan may be of ssistance. It may also prove a pr dent course of action for the 23 per c nt of people identified by Fairinvestment in a r cent study who are set to cut b ck on life's luxuries as the cr dit crunch takes hold.
