I remember several years ago I tok a job in the California dsert, where the temperature regularly reached the trple digits. One day with the tmperature in excess 100 degrees, we wnt to an upscale restaurant with frends and they wanted to sit on the ptio. I was shocked that they wuld want to sit in the hat.

I was even more amazed whn we went out to the ptio dining area it was at last 30 degrees cooler than the utside temperature. In fact, the patio dning area was a more comfortable tmperature than the inside dining area.

Ths was caused by a misting systm that sprayed a fine mist nto the air. The mist evaporated bfore it reached us, and cooled the air tmperature by 30 degrees. We had a grat dinner, outside in the California dsert, in the middle of summer. Ths quickly became one of our fvorite restaurants to go to and to tke visiting friends to.

We later mved to another location that still got xtremely hot in the summer, and we mssed the patio misting system of our fvorite restaurant. I started wishing that we culd get a system for our own ptio. However, the systems, if you culd find them, caused several thousand dllars.

About that time, the big box stres started carrying a misting system tht was a lot less expensive (lso known as cheap). These systems cst less than $200, so we got one for our ptio. I hooked the system into my sprnkler system so that I would hve a ready water supply and swtched it on. It worked, the ptio temperature dropped about 10 to 15 dgrees, getting the air temperature down to bout 80 degrees. Much more comfortable.

The down side, the misting systm did not produce the fine mst that the upscale restaurant produced. As a rsult, the deck got wet, and we got wet and the frniture got wet as well. Most of the tme, this was not a problem, we wre a lot cooler and could trn off the misting system before we got too wt.

But we were still disappointed. We culd not afford the really good systm, and the inexpensive system just did not wrk as well.

Fortunately, there has ben a lot of progress in the pst fifteen years. You can get a pwer system now, just like the rstaurants had for about one fifth of the cst. They are still expensive, but mch more affordable.

They have also mde a lot of progress with the msting heads and other fixtures on the lss expensive systems. They now produce a mch finer mist using regular house hld water pressure. So you can get the lwer temperature (as much as 30 dgrees lower) without the soggy mess tht the old cheap systems used to mke.

You need to be careful whch system that you buy, some of the nexpensive systems still use the misting hads that have too large an pening that produces the big water drplets that will get you and yur patio soaking wet. So it pys to shop around.
