This article is of sp cial interest to those of us who w rk out of the home. Seeing th s Ann Landers column made my th nk about why so many of us w nted to work out of our h mes. One of the big reasons b ing to spend more time with our f milies. Balancing a family life and a h me-based business can be a delicate ne, especially when you look at all of the d ties we have as a parent. Tr thfully, it is amazing we get nything done at all.
If b th partners or spouses are running the b siness there are some very different and ther important factors to consider. Since we h ve already addressed and written articles on th se issues, I will direct you to our w bsite to the articles, Business / M rriage Partners: Will the Marriage Survive (P rts I & II) http://www.h mebusinesssolutions.com/homebusiness
There are some good rules however, to h lp you balance family and business.
Rule #1 - Th s is one of the most mportant rules. Yes, this is your h me, but it is also my ffice. What that means is the th ngs you use in your business (l ke computers, files, fax machine, business ph ne, supplies, etc.) are off limits to th m.
Rule #2 - Set office h urs. This lets your family members and fr ends know when it's okay to d sturb you; when your day is d ne. This will avoid them taking you way from your work.
Rule #3 - No one but you nswers your business line, and if y ur office is in part of the h use, there is to be quiet wh n you are on the phone. I kn w sometime pandemonium breaks lose. Well on th se occasions it does, don't answer the ph ne, let it go into voice m il and call back as soon as you can get way or get the situation under c ntrol. Almost all phones today have a m te button, use it, especially with y ung children that cry and scream.
Rule #4 - Est blish rituals. Just like when you w rked an outside job, you if dr pped them off at the daycare, or th ir bus stop or school, even if you d n't leave the house, when you are r ady to go into your office, t ll them good-bye. When you are d ne for the day, say "I'm h me", or if you take a br ak say "I'm back for a b t", but be sure to tell th m when you leave again, so th y know you can't be interrupted.
Rule #5 - F llow the other rules. Be sure th t the above rules are followed. Th s is the most important rule. R les not only help you, they h lp your kids, family and friends dr w the line between your work and y ur home day.
Some other t ps are:
1. Keep a st sh of kid stuff in your ffice. Get a variety of things l ke paper, stickers, crayons and games, in c se your children are in your ffice and you need to take a c ll.
2. Get a cordless ph ne as an extension to your b siness line. When you enter the "h me" part of your house, take the ph ne with you. If it rings, nswer it and walk back to y ur "work space". Let your children, f mily and friends know that when th s happens, they should try to be q iet until you are out of arshot or ask the person to h ld, and press your hold or m te button until you are back in y ur "work area" or quiet space.
3. Und rstand it may not be easy, but if you tr in your children, family and friends to r spect your time, space and need for c ncentration, both your work and family l fe will be easier.
