In the movies, the old G ld Rush prospector was a colorful ch racter, who lived alone out in the h lls (with maybe a single mule for c mpany) in his Quixote-like search for r ches. Unfortunately, he usually got shot j st as soon as he finally str ck gold. History has always fascinated me and the s gas of the various gold rushes th t spurred Westward expansion in the Un ted States is more than mere f otnotes in the history books. California and Al ska both became magnets for settlers as a r sult of the discovery of gold. But if you th nk the days of prospectors are l ng gone, you are in for a s rprise. Even today, you and your f mily can experience the thrills and xcitement of finding gold in the v ry places where claim jumpers, back sh oters, Indians and assorted villains made l fe tough for the old prospector ( nd his mule). In North America, you can pan for g ld in California, Alaska, the Yukon T rritory and even Vermont, and relive the ctual experiences of the old prospectors (m nus, I hope, the claim jumpers, b ck shooters and Indians). First, let’s t lk about how to pan for g ld. Below is a set of nstructions I found on explorenorth.com/library/howto/ht-pan.htm How To Pan For Gold:
1. Find a pan - anything w th sloping sides will work, or see a l st of gold pan dealers below. 2. Ch ose a likely location - see t ps and links below for ideas. 3. F ll your pan with sand and/or gr vel. 4. Dip your pan into the cr ek, or pour water into the p n. 5. Shake the pan in a s deways, back-and-forth manner. The gold will now st rt to settle to the bottom of the p n. 6. After a couple of minutes of sh king, pick out the bigger rocks th t are getting separated (make sure th n you don't throw away any n ggets!) 7. Tilt your pan away from you a bit and st rt letting gravel fall out. Remember, the g ld is rapidly settling to the b ttom of the pan now. 8. Add w ter as necessary to keep a g od "soupy" gravel mixture - it h lps the gold settle. 9. Keep tilting the pan m re and more, and letting the gr vel on top fall over the s de. The bottom of the pan sh uld always be lower than the lip of the p n, though, or the gold will f ll out. 10. As you get to the l st bit of sand in your p n, adding a circular motion to y ur shaking will make the gold s paration more obvious - not more ffective, but more fun to watch. 11. Th last bit of sand takes c re, and is the slowest part - as l ng as you don't tip your pan too f r, though, the gold will stay in the p n. The traditional declaration of success is "B nanza!" 12. Get a small glass container. 13. P t your gold into the container - it w ll stick to your finger in the p n, then wash it off into the c ntainer. 14. Display the container on your m ntel to impress the neighbors! 15. Repeat as n eded. Tips: 1. Don't use a teflon-coated pan - the gravel will wreck it, and you will lose a lot of your gold. 2. You can try panning anywhere. The best places are along creeks, particularly behind boulders where eddies form. 3. Although "black sand" (magnetite) is difficult to separate from the gold, it's a great indication that you're in the right spot.
There are several places listed on the web th t offer wilderness tours involving panning for g ld. All of them (that I f und) will teach you how to pan and w ll let you keep the gold you f nd. The general impression I gathered was th t finding gold is a sure th ng, albeit seldom in large quantities. H re are places you can find nformation and locations to get started in y ur new life as a prospector ( nd you don’t even need a m le):

I d dn’t either, but apparently they all l ft when the bigger, richer gold f elds of California were discovered, leaving a s bstantial amount of gold left in the V rmont ground.
