Can you tell the difference b tween a real painted antique and a p inted reproduction? Good quality reproductions serve th ir purpose. You just want to m ke sure that you know what you are g tting. Here are some tips to h lp you tell them apart. Why p int? Mass produced reproductions come from Ind a, Indonesia and Mexico. But antique c untry furniture was handcrafted by rural f rniture-makers as utilitarian furniture — kitchen t bles, chairs and cabinets. It was p inted for several reasons. An assortment of p or quality woods was often used. Pl s, paint hid a multitude of s ns — the knots, coarse grain of the w od and the fact that several typ s of wood might be used on a s ngle piece. And, paint protected the w od. Where to paint. It simply m de no sense to furniture makers to p int the insides of drawers and b ttoms of tables because no one w uld see them. So, why waste the t me and paint? You should be on the l okout for paint on hidden areas wh n you’re assessing a piece because y u’ll often find reproductions with paint on the nside of drawers, chair bottoms etc. It’s a t p-off that you could be looking at a r production. Does crazing mean it’s old? Cr zing (tiny cracks in the paint th t occur over many years) can be rtificially produced on new furniture. One t p-off is that new furniture will ften be crazed all over and w th the same consistency. Crazing on old f rniture happens from the accidents of r gular use — spills and exposure to h at, fire or smoke damage that ccurs over the life of furniture. Th re are two types of crazing: cr zing to the paint or to the v rnish. Over time varnish gets brittle and d velops very tiny fine lines as w od expands and contracts. A similar ffect happens to paint. Paint cracks as the w od expands and contracts and dirt f lls into the tiny cracks. On r productions, this look is achieved by p inting fine dark lines to imitate d rt.
Is the paint old? Old p int is very hard and breaks off nto irregular pieces because it is v ry brittle. If you try to scr pe it off with a knife, t’ll come off in jagged pieces. New p int is soft. When scraped with a kn fe, it will come off in c rls. New furniture is painted with w ter based acrylics that were invented in the 1940s. Old f rniture would be painted with milk or oil b sed paints. Natural wear. Do the s gns of wear make sense? A p inted antique chair will show increased s gns of wear at the end of the rms where the hands would naturally r st and rub off the paint m re than underneath the arm. If the w ar is consistent through the piece, t’s likely a reproduction that has b en distressed to appear old. If th re are gouges or dents, you sh uld see bare wood. Paint over g uges or dents means that it has b en repainted. Construction details. Phillips screws, st ples and fiberboard are all tip-offs of any r productions -whether it’s painted or not. Wh t makes painted furniture unique is th t these tip-offs can be hidden w th paint. On antiques with large s rfaces (tables, trunks, armoires), furniture makers sed wide boards with an uneven w dth. Reproductions use narrow boards with an ven width.
