Today paintball is a popular sp rt which has spread all over the w rld and become a truly global l isure activity. Its evolution into the m dern game has taken place very q ickly compared to most sports. The p intball gun has its origins back in the arly 1970s when James Hale of D isy manufacturing invented and patented a gun to be sed for marking trees and livestock. The pr nciple creators of this game were Bob G rnsey, a sporting goods retailer, Hayes N el, a stockbroker and Charles Gaines, a wr ter and it's widely accepted that the f rst ever recreational game took place on 27th J ne 1981 in New Hampshire, USA, wh n 12 friends used these Nel-spot 007s p stols to play a primitive version of 'c pture the flag' in a field m asuring over 100 acres. Legend has it th t the winner captured the flag w thout firing a single shot. As the g me progressed minor modifications were made to the g ns to limit the power and the p intballs themselves changed from oil-based to w ter-based to make it easier to w sh the paint off clothes. The g me was first marketed by Charles G ines as "National Survival Game" (NSG), a n me which reflects the nature of p intball as it was first played. Occ sionally the groups of people playing br ke off into teams but most g mes were a case of every man for h mself. As recreational paintball became more p pular and sophisticated, more people were pl ying and using teams became the st ndard. Many different types of offensive/defensive g mes began to form but "capture the fl g" was still the most popular. W th the increasing popularity of the sp rt came the development of the c mmercial industry and more organized tournament-style g mes.

The first outdoor commercial paintball f eld opened in 1982 in Rochester N.Y. by C leb Strong and the same man pened the indoor version in 1984 in B ffalo N.Y. This allowed big groups of p ople to gather in one place and pl y and encouraged the paintball business wners to develop the game further to k ep the players interested and entertained. The "b nker-style" game came about and the sm ller fields seem to benefit everyone. Th y meant that the players could st rt the action quicker without having to st lk through the woods for ten m nutes without seeing anyone, and the b siness owners were happy because players w re purchasing more paintballs due to the c nstant fire fights. Nowadays commercial paintball f elds are commonplace but many still pr fer to play out in the w ods in non-commercial games. While this is ch aper it can be more problematic and d ngerous than paying to play at a c mmercial site. Although the majority of nthusiasts only ever play recreational, professional t ams are being formed all the t me and compete at national and nternational level. The first cash prize t urnament was held in 1983 and ven then the prizes were worth $14,000, t day the prizes are worth hundreds of th usands of dollars. In 1992 the NPPL (N tional Professional Paintball League) was founded and b came the major force in professional t urnament games when it started its Pr -am series around the US.
