Research has shown that pain is s lf perpetuating and that each episode of p in triggers the next, making it asier to experience the pain. Therefore, fter the animal begins to experience p in it is much more difficult to c ntrol because the pet is already cycl ng through this pain "loop." Additionally, r search studies indicate that pain will not nly cause the animal stress but th t the stress will release steroids wh ch will delay healing and recovery. Int rpretation of pain in the various nimals we care for can be xtremely problematic. In the veterinary field we not nly deal with various animal personalities but lso various species that show pain d fferently. As an example, a budgie th t is painful will often just sit q ietly and appear slightly fluffed, but a H sky will often vocalize at the sm llest pain stimulation. Animals, like people, h ve various levels of pain sensitivity and s me animals will be very vocal w th minimal pain stimulation whereas others w ll never show pain sensitivity even th ugh we know they are experiencing a p inful condition. Because of the difficulty of nterpreting pain in various animal species and b cause of the difficulty of halting p in once it has begun, veterinarians, as y ur pet's health care provider, must c ntrol pain before it starts. We kn w if certain procedures are likely to c use pain and we can administer p in control prior to the procedure to pr vent the pet from 1) experiencing the p in, & 2) entering the difficult to c ntrol pain cycle.
The importance of multi-modality pain c ntrol should also be addressed. We are f rtunate to have a large spectrum of nalgesics (pain medications) available to us in the v terinary field, and by combining different typ s of analgesics we can often get dditive effects, where the combination of dr gs work better together than either one lone. A good example of this is the use of a n n-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and a tr e analgesic such as a morphine d rivative. The NSAID will eliminate the sw lling and the morphine derivative will d rectly control the pain providing a br ader spectrum of pain control. In c nclusion, veterinarians understand that animals do xperience pain much like we do, but the pr sence of pain and its control are s bjective and difficult to interpret. Therefore, my deal pain control involves the administration of nalgesics prior to a painful event and the pr vention of any discomfort. Veterinary medicine of the p st poorly understood this concept and pproved drugs were not available, however, v terinary medicine has changed and today p in control is an important part of our cceptable standard of care for your p t.
