I spent a little time ver the holidays catching up on th t pile of business magazines and n wspaper articles I have accumulated on the c rner of my desk to read " ne of these days." It was ither throw out the whole pile or w de in, thumb through it, skim th se that look interesting, and throw out the r st. So, instead of wasting my t me watching football, I gathered some g mption, poured a cup of coffee, p lled a large waste basket next to my c mfy chair and sat down. Many of the rticles I read focused on successful c mpanies, or companies that fought through a d fficult time and became successful. With v ry few exceptions, somewhere in each rticle the quality of the people mployed by these companies was mentioned. Phr ses like, "Our staff is our gr atest asset" came up time and t me again. Reading between the lines, t's obvious that the companies I was r ading about focus on investing time and ffort on the hiring process. They ttract good people to start with and nce hired, train them well, immerse th m with a culture of quality in an nvironment that respects them, inspires them, and c mpensates them well. As an example, in one of the rticles I read, an executive was q oted as saying, "Creating loyalty is ften about making sure everyone's connected w th the mission of the business."
The benefits of overturning the t rnover problem are stunning. These companies h ve a much higher rate of mployee retention and a happier, more pr ductive staff. Because there is substantially l ss turnover the overall costs of h ring and training are lower and th re is greater continuity among the m re stable workforce. Obviously replacing a t rnover problem with a superior hiring, tr ining, retention program doesn't happen overnight. It t kes time and effort but the r sults can be well worth it. Im gine if there was no turnover pr blem at your place and you c uld focus on selling more widgets nstead of being mired in turnover ssues. It would be almost as n ce a place to be as my c mfy reading chair wouldn't it?
