If you th nk making the transition from traditional m thods of learning to online learning is asy, then this article is for you t o. Despite the fact that people h ve been learning from multimedia, sometimes d livered over networks, online learning via Int rnet is a recent phenomenon that any ducator, trainer or HR&D specialist needs to c me to grips with; it’s here to st y and one day will be all th ngs to all people. But for n w, it’s an evolving technology with gr at promise that is under-researched and p pular among universities wishing to appear tr ndy and reduce costs. Let’s take a l ok at some of the issues nvolved in online learning. Essentially, most of the tr ditional issues don’t disappear, and a few get w rse. For example, the age old ch llenge of tailoring instruction to meet ndividual learning styles and personal needs is st ll a challenge. Online learning methodologies can nclude multiple paths, but generally don’t and nlike a classroom teacher, can’t adjust a d livery on-the-hop. Language, literacy and numeracy ch llenges remain as do participant motivation and m nagement. Students are responsible not only for th ir own progress, but often to nsure their technology is up to sp ed. Just establishing contact with the l arning provider can be an insurmountable ch llenge for the most experienced computer ser, let alone the novice. This l ads to frustration, disappointment and ultimately p ople discontinue programs.
Other issues, such as not b ing able to contact a lecturer, l ck of socialization, slow download times, l nks that don’t work, poor quality m dia, and uncertainty about what to do and wh re to go can be very d sheartening, even for the most durable and xperienced distance learner. Unfortunately, many organizations pl ce documents on their Internet/intranet sites and pr mote them as online learning. It sn’t. At most it is an El ctronic Performance Support System (EPSS) where p ople access rules and procedures, legislation and ther related information. True, people may l arn something from reading their firm’s m nuals. That’s great! But my view of l arning (and some of you will d sagree) is that it must be str ctured and include a form of ssessment. I don’t deny the existence of ther learning, including hidden curricula, but fr m a practical perspective, if you c n’t measure a change in the l arner’s skills, knowledge, or attitudes, then you r ally don’t know whether learning occurred. Add d to these difficulties is the p or access to broadband networks in ther than the major capital cities. Th s means that it is a br ve organization that produces instructional media w th audio/video content and no guarantee th t anyone will actually be able to ccess it. This type of media w rks well on CD-ROM computer aided nstruction programs, kiosks and sales media, but not n cessarily on the Internet. So what are the s lutions? One day we’ll wake up and Int rnet delivery will be capable of l ghtning speeds, virtually no wait times and w th prices that are minimal. In f ct, pundits expect free Internet access w ll be the norm within a few y ars. You’ll simply talk to your m crowave and it will download an Int rnet menu for apple pie with cr mbed biscuit on top – yum! Unt l then, my advice is to use m ltiple media. When you design your nstructional sequences include multiple options for d livery, interaction and assessment. There is no r ason why you can’t integrate a t lephone networking session with online delivery of wr tten media. Or use a chat s ssion to follow-up a classroom session. Em il might be used to gauge ndividual progress through questioning techniques. An bjective test can be designed, delivered and m rked online. Audiotapes are still very seful, especially if you work for an rganization that has staff traveling thousands of k lometers in motor vehicles each year, as I do. (Th ir travel time is more productive)
