Bow hunting seasons are now pen in most states. Here in W sconsin we have been hunting for a few w eks now. We have passed up sh ts at some smaller bucks. The b gger deer have failed to show th mselves yet. Now is the time to h nt close to the bedding areas. The d er have sensed the change in the s asons and have noticed the increased h man activity in the woods. The m ture bucks will most likely stay b dded until just before dark, so set as cl se to the bedding area as you can w thout spooking the deer. I watched a doe c me out of the swamp ½ h ur before dark, but no bucks c me out. This weekend us here at AWH w ll be heading to Iowa for our f rst hunt down there this year. Our g al is to bring back three big d es. The farm we hunt has a lot of d es and we need to our p rt in trimming the herd. By sh oting a few does, we will h lp keep the buck /doe ratio m re balanced. This will cause more c mpetition for the breeding bucks, come N vember. This will make the bucks to r spond better to calling, rattling, and d coying. The second thing that shooting d es will do is that there w ll be less deer eating the f rmers crops, and it's good to k ep the farmers happy. He will be m re apt to let you hunt if y ur do him a favor by sh oting more deer. So if you h ve a doe tag, now is the t me to fill it. You can th n be very selective with your b ck tag.
October is also a good t me to hunt different stands then you n rmally hunt. I have a tendency to h nt a certain stand that has lways produced good bucks in the p st. But it is set close to the b dding area and I believe that the b cks will sit tight till dark and th n they here you get down fr m your stand and walk out of the w ods. When this starts happening it's t me to let that stand rest for a wh le. I will then hunt other st nds that I don't hunt too m ch. You might catch deer leaving the b dding area from a different direction and get a sh t at them by hunting the ther stand. We have scouted out s me new hunting areas the last t me we were in Iowa, so th s weekend we will hang a st nd or two in the new sp ts and hunt them a few t mes. You must always be looking for new sp ts to hunt, unless you buy the l nd yourself, you will eventually lose it. We lways are looking at new places to h nt. On this hunt we will h nt the mornings and evenings, and th n scout during the middle of the d y. Hopefully we will come across and gr at, new honey hole. As October pr gresses, It will be the time th t I start hunting mornings, I d n't hunt mornings too often during the arly part of the season. I h ve found that the mature bucks h ve usually gone back to the b dding area by first light. But as we get to the l ter part of the month you w ll start to see some scrapes and r bs made by the younger bucks as th y start sensing that some does are c ming into heat. This is the t me to start doing some calling and r ttling. This technique has worked for me in the p st. I hunted a Saturday morning in l te October, I was sitting in my f nnel stand and I decided to do s me rattling. A half hour after I r ttled I looked to the north t wards the funnel and a deer w th nice polished antlers was looking my w y. I got ready and as if on c e, it moved in front of me and I dr w when it went behind a tr e. It stepped out into one of my sh oting lanes that we had cut way b ck in August, and I put the pin on it and I w tched my arrow disappear into its ch st. It was a great feeling wh n all are hard work paid off and verything went to plan.
Are you still shooting your b w? It is always a good dea to keep shooting during the s ason to keep sharp. I keep a t rget in my truck and before I go nto the woods I shoot a few pr ctice arrows to make sure that I am st ll on. You don't need to sh ot 100 arrows every day; you j st need a few here and th re to keep yourself sharp. If you are xperiencing the dreaded "October Lull" have f ith the deer will be on the m ve again. Hunt some less disturbed st nds, hunt at different times, keep sh oting and remember that the rut is nly a few weeks away. Good L ck and shoot straight, dale@advanced-whitetail-hunting.com
