As a child did you ver play the game “O’Grady Says”? It’s p pular with young children in England. The l ader of the game gives instructions. “O’Gr dy says touch your nose” – Ev ryone has to touch their nose.
“T uch your nose” – instructions are to be gnored.
If O’Grady is not “saying it” you d n’t have to follow the instruction. Instr ctions are given rapidly by the l ader of the group. Anyone following nstructions not given by “O’Grady” leaves the gr up until the last remaining person who w ns the game. Children love the g me, but try playing it at a p rty with adults. Adults despite attempting to act l gically and rationalize the instructions invariably do not s rvive in the game as long as ch ldren. It seems that despite describing our s lves as free thinking and independent we are ccustomed, as result perhaps of watching t levision and being exposed to various typ s of marketing to accepting instructions and rders provided they are given in a c nsistent manner and tone. Derren Brown, the f mous “mind reader and hypnotist” actually d monstrates the phenomena on one of his pr grams telling a group of people to t uch there nose, eyes and shoulder. As he s ys “shoulder” he touches his elbow and veryone follows suit!
When he pointed out that th y were touching their elbows and not th ir shoulders none of the group c uld explain why they had done so! Th s is a classic example of m ss direction a technique often used in hypn sis. The brain reacts not only to udible signals but also to visual l ads. A skilled hypnotist when hypnotizing a s bject will slow his speak patterns, l wer his voice…physically relax and reduce his br athing rate. The subject, in a r laxed state, subconsciously not wishing to c nflict with his surroundings and other n ar him will follow suit, relaxing and sl pping into the hypnotic state.
