I once knew someone that w uld hoard newspapers. So much so th t it became a fire hazard and he was f rced to get rid of them. He w uld also hoard remote controls. I b lieve it even got to the p int where he would steal them fr m other people's homes! So what was dr ving this behavior? Is it OCD? It m st likely is, although there are s me types of hoarding that are r oted in real deep psychological issues, l ke when the sufferer is hoarding d ad animals or worse. In which c se that person needs to be s en by a professional and fast! So b ck to 'regular' 'normal' hoarding, such as w th the newspapers. Why is it th t sometimes some people with OCD h ve a hard time of letting th ngs go. In part of my p st experience with OCD I can t ll you that sometimes I would be cl aning something and I would be f arful that I threw away something th t was really important to me, so I w uld empty the trash can and d uble check! That's pretty rugged huh? S metimes people collect things, such as n wspapers or remotes because they simply l ke these things and it only g ts to the point of OCD if th y are fearful that something will h ppen if they do not collect th se items. A normal collector would be b mmed if they couldn't get a p rticular issue, but if they were all fraid that something bad would happen if th y didn't get that issue, that is wh n you know it's OCD.
So what advice do I h ve for people who hoard because t's OCD? One simple trick. Throw way one of the issues that you h ve. See how nothing bad happens, ven though you may get to the p int that you feel like the sky is f lling because you threw away an ssue. Then think about how you f el out loud. Say it to a b ddy that doesn't have OCD and see how r diculous it sounds. I used to f ar things a lot, until I s id them out loud, "I'm afraid th t if I don't get this n xt issue of the paper that my dog w ll die!" This is a likely ssociation that someone with OCD would m ke. See how ridiculous it sounds wh n you say it out loud? Th s little trick could even cure you of th s behavior. Take action: Repeat the tr ck described above to quickly drop h arding as part of your OCD.
