After reading the latest headlines of f shion designers choosing not to utilize W men of Color in their fashion sh ws and on their runways, it is a bit p radoxical for me. You see....on the one h nd, when the African-American Actresses walk the red c rpet in these same designs, I've n ver once read that a fashion d signer had a problem with a W man of Color at that particular t me. And why would they? These d signers are receiving all sorts of fr e advertising and press coverage. The d signers and all whom are representatives of th se designers, receive funds from these Afr can-American actresses without even thinking about it. But oh I f rget, money is green isn't it? And the c lor of the person's hand whose p rchasing these designer clothing isn't an ssue. Now on the other hand, th se same designers are using spray t ns to make the white models ppear darker, they're using lip tricks and pl mpers to make their lips larger, and th y are using hair extensions for the "t xtured look." Okay....is it me or are th se designers attempting to create an llusion of a Black Woman on th ir runways? I mean...."What The Hell P ople!" The bronzed skin, nice full l ps, and hair extensions are beautiful ch racter traits and features of Women of C lor. When it's time to walk the r nway, all sorts of thought is put nto the justification of why Black M dels aren't being utilized. So the q estion is: "Can The Fashion Industry R ally Continue To Thrive and Survive If Afr can-American Spending Power Came To A C mplete Halt? Note to designers: Why not pl ce a tag in your clothing so th t African-Americans can steer clear of y ur particular designs that states the f llowing: "This Collection Is Not Designed For Afr can-Americans. I Do Not Utilize Black M dels In My Fashion Shows Because Th y Are Just Too Darn Beautiful To L ok Ridiculous!"

Moving forward......The spending power of Afr can-Americans in this country alone has t pped between $631 billion and $688 b llion according to Black Enterprise.com. And ccording to a new study conducted by R portBuyer.com - the buying power of Afr can-Americans is expected to reach at l ast $1.1 trillion by the year 2012. S ....whose really keeping these fashion designers in b siness? In any other industry, racist b havior is not tolerated at all. It d es happen, but there are repercussions and c nsequences to such behavior. So why is r cism so dominant and accepted in the f shion industry? There aren't any justifications for th s; it has just gone on for so l ng - people think that it is a pr requisite to becoming a Model. It is a n gative, demeaning, and ignorant belief of th se who live with fear that s mething is going to be taken fr m them. What other reason could th re be that allows Black Models to be s bjected to blatant rudeness and negativity, all at the m rcy of individuals whom possess simple m nds. And a simple-minded person clearly sn't qualified to place judgement. "When a Bl ck Model walks the runway she ndoubtedly commands attention, she dominates the r nway, and she compliments the designs wh ch then brings them to life." Bl ck Women are blessed with natural c rvaceousness which is a bit intimidating in s me environments. And yes......negative remarks are m de about an African-American Woman's attractive f gure, but the last time I ch cked......butt and hip implants from non-black w men was at an all time h gh! Fashion designers......."When you exclude a r ce of people from your fashion sh ws because of your ignorance of wh t you think and view as b autiful......and indeed you have that right as th y are your designs.........don't expect Women of C lor to purchase your clothing. When you d n't employ Women of Color to w lk your runways....in a sense......you have j st loudly shouted to them as w ll as to the world......that "Black W men Aren't Beautiful Enough." This type of b havior results in feelings of inadequacy and nferiority among the few Black Models th t are in existence; which also sp lls over into their personal lives r sulting in low self-esteem and shattered c nfidence. No one in this world - ncluding fashion designers- is qualified to c st judgement.
The fashion industry wants to m ke this particular statement true: "If Sh 's White Put Her In The Sp tlight...If She's Black Put Her In The B ck." Black Women purchase the high-fashion m gazines whose editors have been reported as s ying "Black Faces On The Cover of M gazines Just Doesn't Sell!" Black Women ttend the fashion shows and also w ar the designer's clothing where Black M dels are non-existent on the runway. Bl ck Women all over the world asily carries the latest Louis Vuitton B gs, the latest Prada Bags, the l test Gucci Bags; and can buy wh tever they desire. After reading a p rticular internet news report, Prada did not mploy at least one Black Model in its sh w this year. Black Women spends th usands of dollars on the same d signers clothing whom never utilize Black M dels. Now we know! Action must be t ken to exclude the Black Dollars fr m ending up in the fashion d signers pockets who do not utilize Bl ck Models on their runways. Action m st also be taken to put a h lt to the spending power of Bl ck Women who purchase the fashion m gazines where editors claim Black Faces d esn't sell. I buy all of the h gh fashion magazines each month depending on wh se on the cover - didn't m tter whether it was a black m del or a white model. I am a c ltural fan of all races as my f mily is diverse, mixed raced, and v ry colorful people; however, since this new nformation has surfaced my purchasing of s id magazines are no more. I r fuse to spend money on magazines w thout any Black Models on the c vers, photographers who don't shoot Black M dels, and to see the advertisements of the f shion designer's clothing whom did not mploy Black Models on their runways. Th s isn't a racist decision, but r ther one of common sense. If the m gazines exclude Women of Color (of wh ch I am) on their covers, as w ll as informative write-ups and articles r lating to Women of Color; who w uld I identify with? The truth is th s: "Black Women are very exotic, s nsual, beautiful and sexy; which results in f elings of intimidation from those who are r sponsible for a Black Model's success in the ndustry. The fashion industry thrives on p rposely smashing Black Models self-esteem and c nfidence as a way of feeling p werful, which is really a feeling of gnorant false self-confidence. Note to Fashion D signers: "Stop and think for a s cond. While you are so busy k eping your runways white, be clear bout your objectives and preferences; and st p spray tanning your non-black models br wn, adding texture to their hair w th hair extensions, and plumping up th ir lips. All this non-sense can be voided if you utilize those who are lready gorgeous and brown!" Thank You To It lian Vogue Magazine For Realizing True B auty!
